By Rhoda Watkins. Wildlife tracking, a time-honoured practice, serves as a bridge between humanity and the wild. Whether you’re an aspiring naturalist or simply seeking a deeper connection with nature, mastering the art (and science!) of tracking opens a fascinating door to understanding animal behaviour. From the dawn of humanity, tracking has been an integral part of our evolutionary journey. Early humans, devoid of the technological advancements we enjoy today, depended on their keen observation and tracking skills for sustenance and safety. Tracking was not merely a skill but a lifeline t ..read more

King among trees The silver Birch. (Betula Pendula) Genus- Betulaceae The Silver Birch is one of the bushcrafters most beautiful and useful trees. It has been used for thousands of years to build canoes and containers, start fires, for medicine, provide sustenance, and make dyes; the fungi that grow on it have countless uses.  In this article, I hope to show you what this tree is all about and why (IMO!) it deserves the title of king among trees.  Overview Fully grown specimens can take anywhere from 80 to 100 years to mature, reach heights of 30 metres, and spread to 20 metres wide ..read more

What’s the one thing that always makes the joy of a fire less joyful, well if for you its smoke in your face, I have a solution. Solo Stove sent me stove to have a play with, and I’m rather impressed by what they sent… What’s in the Box…   What did they send? Well They sent me a Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0. I received two large boxes from Daniel at Solo Stove, one contained the Bonfire 2.0 and the other some tools. I was filled with that giddy excitement of new kit to play with, so without hesitation I set too opening the boxes, staring with the bonfire.   The packaging is strong, with a ..read more

Alongside our tests of the AC60 and B80 units, the AC180 stood out with its impressive 1152-watt storage capacity. Here’s what we think: First Impressions Robust Packaging and Easy Handling Right from the start, the AC180 exudes durability. The packaging is excellent, ensuring safe transportation with layers of protection. Weighing 16kg, it’s substantial, but the well-designed twin handles, one on each side, make it comfortably portable. Its rugged appearance signals that this tool is meant to be used, not pampered, and it can deliver 1000w of its 1152w capacity, meaning it’s ready for action ..read more

Firstly, we have put these through their paces on a few outdoor activities and the scope of their usefulness is huge, especially when combined with solar panels. Secondly, we are not power station experts, and never intended to run all sorts of technical tests comparing these units to other units and picking up on the intricacies or the pros and cons of how they work compared to other manufacturers or models.  What we have done is taken them out and used them in the woods, doing remote work with power tools, running eventsand camping; now we have an opinion of how useful they are, and how ..read more

Autumn: The Four seasons

I have built just a little scratch fire. Enough to boil a kettle of water, enough to keep just comfortably warm, enough to watch the fire flow through the coals. The sun is going down now, and it’s gone beneath the tree line. I know it’s still there, though, because the soft light bounces off the clouds, setting the sky alight. The flat cirrus clouds have been lit up – orange, pink, burnt gold. Like waves of molten steel. Silence reigns. Not a sound. It’s that time of half-life; the daytime creatures have gone to bed, but the nighttime wanderers have yet to emerge. There’s that first twinkle o ..read more

Files into Knives

Another pretty obvious source of good steel for knives is the humble file. Most files are made from high-carbon tool steel and can be used to make great cutting tools. That said, sometimes you will find a file that is just case hardened (i.e. only the surface/teeth will be high carbon, and the core will be soft mild steel). The easiest way to find out which file you have is to put it in a vice with a couple of inches sticking out and smack it with a hammer. I recommend wrapping some tape around it first to catch the pieces and reduce the risk of shrapnel wounds though! Lovely fine grain and ha ..read more
