This is the most fragrant time of the year in many ways, all of winter’s grays and browns speckled with the occasional treat such as Winter Sweet, who’s delicous honeysuckle like aroma reminds us that nature is still there, producing wonderful colours and smells, even when it feels like the summer is a million miles away. Spring bursts forth with all it’s gentle glory, a slowly building concophany of colours and aromas – camelias, daffodils, grape hyacinth, crocii, magnolia and our personal favourite (cos you can eat it!), lilac. Lilac is one of the shortest seasons in flower, magnolias tend t ..read more

Initial Reflection on the Complete Coastal Hunter Gatherer Course
Coastal Survival
by Seamus Kelly

Sat here now almost a week later in quiet reflection, a chill wind blows through my hair, hot sun beats down upon my brow. Here the team looked grizzled in the distance by a south-westerly wind and the unforgiving sand beneath our boots. Taking the long hard walk along the seashore to the rocky headland to set traps and gill nets as the tide recedes. One must be quick and efficient when this task is undertaken. Everyday the fisherman must make the journey, a day off can mean a lost trap or a broken net, we must fish with the tides and not the time yet always being prepared to adapt to changin ..read more

Sometimes when we are in awe of the great outdoors, be that in the forest, mountain or coast, it’s easy to forget those small micro experiences that make up the entirety of our outdoor adventures. Happiness hides in life’s small details. If you’re not looking, it becomes invisible. — Joyce Brothers It’s in these often unnoticed details that the awe of the magnificent outdoors, this prec ..read more

Met up with Carl, a friend and more experienced member of the Coastal Survival team, to walk our local coast – with wild edibles being on the learning table that day. I would like to say it was a beautiful sunny morning, instead it was cold, grey and the wind cut to the bone, as it often does on the British coast in early spring. Still, as I’m often told, if you want to learn any skill then you need to get out into the environment that’s best for learning that skill, and that’s exactly what we did. Packs on our shoulders, we began by walking through a narrow path which cut through a sea of b ..read more
