Perhaps not many of my blog readers know, but I have moved back to my hometown of London. London is one of the best cities in the world, and I am happy to be back amongst friends and family, but my soul is craving Paris. I’ve been trying to remedy this with pain au chocolats and lots of wine, but to no avail. I decided to check out London’s Parisian Cafe scene (there are more about than you might think!) and came across Maison Bertaux, ideally situated in Soho. The cafe has a quirky charm with its mis-matched chairs sitting on the terrace, and interiors filled with ornaments and fairy lights ..read more

Answering the Most Googled Questions about Parisians

Whenever I am back in my hometown of London I’m often bombarded with questions about the French, as if they were a mysterious alien race. “Do the French like cheese as much as we think they do?” “Why do the French strike so much?” “Do you think the French will like me?” This made me wonder why the general population thought about the French, and Parisians more specifically. I took to Google to unveil your most googled questions about Parisians. A lot of the results were expected (like ‘why do Parisians smoke?’) but unfortunately some of life’s more puzzling Parisian questions were not googled ..read more

A Journey Through Parisian Street Art

A walk around the 20th neighbourhood in Paris will introduce you to a grittier, more diverse side of Paris than you are used to seeing. Gone is your typical 19th century city, with its classic Haussmannian architecture and chic shopfronts; in its place you’ll find vibrantly coloured and often politically-subversive street art ready to catapult you into the 21st Century. Street art in Paris, and especially in the 20th arrondissement, saw a boom in the 1980s, going from strength to strength with association-lead incentives to bring colour to the city of light. The areas of Oberkampf, M ..read more

Paris Meets Seoul to Transform your Skincare Regime

For a perennial Parisian glow, look no further than your local French pharmacy for the best skincare products. In a longstanding tradition, French women have sought the advice of their pharmacist on how to best look after their skin. Indeed, in France there is a certain emphasis on trust; “selling skin care in the same place people get their medicine gives it credibility” says beauty journalist Megan Cahn. However, with beauty trends celebrating skincare secrets from the Far East, and Korean beauty (or K-Beauty as it is called by those in the know) becoming more popular than ever, p ..read more

Pastry provocateur Pierre Hermé has delighted consumers in France, Japan, the USA and beyond with his bestselling macarons since 1998. Being no stranger to the macaron-making process myself, I wanted to explore these tasty treats beyond the classic chocolate, vanilla and raspberry flavours. Pierre Hermé is a macaron maestro, known for turning classic flavours on their head with constantly changing additions like vanilla and olive oil, orange & carrot or even fresh mint. I knew that chocolate or caramel just wouldn’t cut it. So I ventured out to Pierre Hermé’s boutique in Opéra t ..read more

Secret Paris: The Hidden Museum of Romanticism

Tucked away at the foot of Montmartre hill, unbeknownst to many tourists, is La Musée de la vie Romantique. The museum, housing an impressive collection of nineteenth-century objets d’art, can be found at the end of a tree-lined alley in the romantic neighbourhood of “New Athens”. Upon approaching the green-shuttered building, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were stepping onto private property. The museum has retained all of its original charm as a home to philosophical and literary thought. For 30 long years, this was a residence for intense artistic, political and literary activity ..read more

A Peek Inside a 19th Century, Parisian Apartment

As a tourist, or even a local, you will often find yourself gazing up at the formidable apartments that line the great boulevards of Paris with their heavy, ornate doors. Very rarely, however, do you get to see inside one of them. I have been fortunate enough to dine at local Parisienne Florence’s luxury Parisian apartment. It was a soirée of fine wine and great company, but the real star of the evening was the apartment itself. Dating back to the 19th century, and with many original features, our hostess Florence’s home was spectacular to behold. The golden mouldings that spre ..read more

5 Things That Have Disappointed Me About Paris

“Paris is always a good idea“ The French capital has been romanticised in the imagination of people all around the world for centuries. It is what inspired me to learn French, and why I have lived here for all this time. However, the city of light is not without its disappointment. Tourists naively visit Paris in the hope of experiencing all the romance, beauty and love that the city has promised them; only to be faced with litter, beggars and dog poo instead. 1. The Food Ok the food can be amazing, but you’ll have to pay a lot for it. In general, I am not that impressed by F ..read more

Secret Paris: A Day at the Jardin d’Acclimatation

Living in Paris means I get to explore corners of the capital often dismissed by tourists who come to see the city of light in all its splendour, from the top of the Eiffel Tower, or by strolling through the cobbled streets of Montmartre. The Jardin D’Acclimatation is certainly an attraction unheard of by most visitors to Paris. Aimed mainly at children, this garden of greenery was initially opened as a zoo by Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie in 1860. The Jardin d’Acclimatation was a great day out for my boyfriend and I, with many exotic birds on display, including a peacock that was roaming ..read more
