The Good Samaritan - Why Ask this Question to Jesus? For me the words written in the Bible are all there for a reason. There is nothing there by chance. The writer of the Bible specifically felt that a particular sequence was needed to be written. Nothing was done as an afterthought. To God and the writers of the Bible, every word written serves a purpose. In the same critical mind frame, I try to read the passage of the good Samaritan. In the last episode, we talked about why the leaders of Israel through the teacher of the law test Jesus at this point in time. So in continuation of that ..read more

The Good Samaritan - Why this Story at this Point in Time? When I read the Parable of the Good Samaritan, it seems like a clear cut story. There is nothing much to misinterpret in this story. The whole story arc is concluded with the teaching from Jesus on how when the Bible talks about loving your neighbors, everybody, even your enemies are your neighbors. Plain and simple. However, with every Bible study session, I ask the question, why? For this episode, I start off with this question. Why did the teacher of the law stand up to test Jesus? The simple answer is, the Pharisees and the le ..read more

The Good Samaritan - Introduction | Ep:2-1

The Good Samaritan - Introduction I am so excited to be moving on to a new subject! I have chosen to discuss the parable of the good Samaritan in the gospel of Luke. More specifically Luke 10:25-37. I cannot deny that the current rhetoric coming out of the White House influenced me in choosing this passage. But all in all, the message of loving your neighbors hold true regardless of the political rhetoric and climate. Back to passage. The event where a teacher of the law stands up and asks Jesus, 'What must I do to inherit eternal life?' Can also be found in Matthew chapter 22 and Mark ..read more

Conclusion: The Burden of Proof on Faith is on God I guess I am doing this is more for myself than any other reason. The simple act of putting my thoughts into words, then into a video, speaking it out loud, then writing this blog afterwards makes it real for me. A process of bringing what I know down into my heart. So then, what about the story of Rebekah? I am thinking that this theme will come forth a lot, but if you read the title, you already know what I want to get at. The burden of proof on faith is on God. He loves us and he wants to reveal himself to us. More often than not I fi ..read more

It was not because of Rebekah's hospitality When I read the story of Rebekah, I constantly have to be aware of the culture surrounding the event. It is no secret that the culture and society surrounding the time of Rebekah favored heavily towards the male gender. So when the story of Rebekah hinges on Rebekah's hospitality the story is dropped. There is no more investigation. There are no more questions. It is considered fact. A neatly wrapped package, ready to be delivered. A story of the perfect girl, raised and taught to be submissive and hospitable. To the shame of us, we, in the 21st ..read more

Rebekah's Own Personal Miracle My relationship with God has always been personal. I have never depended on someone else's relationship with God. Yes, I have received advice and insight on God's will from others. However, the thing that changes my life is my personal experiences. The things that shake the core of my being cannot be things that happen to others. It always have been first hand experiences. My success, my failure, my hurt, my joy, my love, my happiness, my sorrow. For example, no matter how much I read and hear about marriage, it has never changed me. Only until my marriage, do ..read more

The Hidden Miracle The thing is, over the last few days I have tried to build up this mystery in why Rebekah agreed to leave the very next day. I don't know if I've done a good job at it. Frankly speaking, I probably dragged it on for too long. But hey, to me, the discovery of today's episode really blew my mind. 'The young woman ran and told her mother's household about these things' - Genesis 24:28 She ran home. After drawing water from a well and filling a basin for more than 10 camels, she ran home. Usually when one finishes a hard and laborious job he or she then trudges back home. P ..read more

Rebekah - The Key is in the Camels | Ep: 1-5

The Key is in the Camels So Rebekah did not know God before she met Abraham's servant. Therefore she could not have had the faith already built up for her to have said, 'Yes, I will go the very next day.' But something in that one chapter allowed Rebekah to have faith. It allowed her to believe. My initial thoughts ranged from the cultural significance of camels during Abraham's time to the social etiquette of ancient middle east. However, everything started to click together as I read about how much a camel can drink in a single sitting. 30 gallons or 135 liters of water in 13 min. Rebek ..read more

Rebekah - If not Faith in God then What? The Questions Continues | Ep: 1-4

If not faith in God then what? The questions continues. We talked about the fact that Rebekah did not hear about Abraham's God before she met with Abraham's servant. So the fact that she agreed to leave the very next day could not have been due to the extraordinary faith that she had in God. Frankly, she did not have the time. The time nor the relationship with God to develop the unquestioning faith that we readily credit her. But when we examine the outcome of the event, she did agree to leave the very next day. So what convinced her? The writer of Genesis (I think it is Moses) does not ..read more

Rebekah - Our Assumptions of Bible Characters | Ep: 1-3

Our Assumptions of Bible Characters A little bit of background. I have never studied theology. I've never went to school for it except for religious studies during middle school and high school. Most of my understanding of the Bible comes from my family's Christian background. My parents were missionaries in Papua New Guinea as Bible translators from 1986 to 2002. They translated the New Testament into the Gwahatike language and developed literacy programs for the 2000 odd people of the Gwahatike language group. Currently my father, Jee Young An, is serving as the pastor for a Korean speaki ..read more
