Pray more, not less. What’s your excuse?

I have often been the subject of my own lies, telling myself that I’m too tired to pray, or letting myself off the hook for lack of prayer by convincing myself that I’ve been too busy to devote more time to prayer. However, this is all completely untrue. It doesn’t matter who you are, what you do or whatever you’re going through, there is no good reason for why we neglect prayer. There isn’t an excuse in the world that would convince God that your lack of prayer is justifiable. Below are some of the common excuses we use to defend ourselves when we fail to pray. Beneath each excuse I’ve offere ..read more

What is Jesus doing now

When Libby and I first started courting, she was doing her PGCE in Cornwall whilst I was in my third year in Bible college. Being so far away from each other, we could only see each other once or twice a month. I remember often wondering during the day in the middle of a boring lecture what she was doing at that very moment. Being smitten by her, she was constantly on my mind, and so I was constantly wondering what she was getting up to. After dying on the cross and rising from the grave, we are told that Jesus Christ ascended physically into heaven. So, that is where he is right now, sat at t ..read more

Who Were the Puritans?
Caerwent Evangelical Baptist Chapel

Who were they? The Puritans were considered to be a rebellious group of ministers during the late sixteenth, seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Puritan writings are among the most influential and treasured Christian writings ever published. Puritan preaching and teaching especially had a deep and lasting impact on the church. But who were they? The term ‘Puritan’ was a derogatory term which originated with those intending to belittle the men who wanted to further reform the Church of England. 1 However, the word ‘Puritan’, similar to the title ‘Christian’, has refined with time as Mar ..read more

Serve the Lord Quietly

Before you read this article, we have been blessed as a church by many sharing their experiences, thoughts, poems, hymns and verses on the WhatsApp group which is a wonderful thing – that was the original intention for why I started the group. In no way do I want that to stop. But Christians should be aware of their own motives and desires for posting anything about their Christian service and gifts online. Self-glorifying also happens too often in a person where the conversation is always directed back to their own experiences and abilities. There is a fine line between sharing something ..read more

Are there Degrees of Punishment in Hell?

Humans clearly consider certain crimes to be more severe than others. Some crimes deserve greater punishment than others. For example, a murderer spends longer in prison than a petty thief, and a rapist or sex-offender is considered to be worse than a tax-evader. They’re all crimes, but the murder, rape and molestation are considered far worse acts of evil.  Not only do we see severities of crimes, but we also consider certain acts of ‘wrong-doings’ worse than others. White lies are apparently not intended to harm an individual, it’s often intended to benefit the person (example: “Do I look fa ..read more

Make much of your isolation

If you are one of the many who has to be in quarantine or isolation for a few weeks (or months for some), then I want to encourage you to use the time well. People have literally changed the world from being in isolation. Let me tell you about a few of them: Martin Luther The great reformer spent 11 months in isolation at Wartburg castle, where he was held prisoner by Frederick the Wise of Saxony for his own safety from May 1521 to April 1522. In just 4 months he translated the whole New Testament into German and after his release, he went on to work on translating the Old Testament. The who ..read more

Coronavirus: not the biggest problem

At the time of writing this (March 16th, 2020), the total number of confirmed Coronavirus (or Covid-19) cases in the UK has reached 1,543 and 124 of those are in Wales—30 of those have been tested positive today. The number of infected people is growing every day, and by the time you’re reading this, I can only guess what has happened. What’s struck me so far is the state of panic that so many people are in, especially in relation to panic-buying. People are fearful of what might happen to them and as a result, they are emptying the supermarket shelves to ensure their own comfort. Fear has str ..read more

The Testimony of Two Sisters

Over the course of the two-and-a-half years that I have been Pastor at Caerwent, by God’s grace I am seeing spiritual-growth in many of the believers. I have also seen the spiritual conversion of some, including two young women: Isabelle and Dixie. It was my pleasure and honour to baptise Isabelle in July and Dixie in September. When I arrived at Caerwent, I assumed that they were both Christians, as did everyone else, including their parents. I think it’s fair to say that even Isabelle and Dixie were unsure as to whether they were Christians or not. Many Christians find it difficult to tell o ..read more

What is God’s will for my life?

How can I know God’s will for my life? This is a question I hear all the time. Your best bet and definitely the best place to start is by reading the Bible. If you’ve never read the whole thing, and aren’t still ploughing through it day by day, then how can you expect to know anything about what God wants for you? Having said that, there are things about our lives that aren’t immediately addressed in the Bible, such as: what job we should pursue, who to marry, how many children should we have and the like. I think what people mean when they ask what God’s will is for them, is how can they k ..read more

Making All Things New

How did you become who you are today? Are you the person you envisioned you would be 10 years ago? We are all products of our past, aren’t we? Every one of us have been shaped and moulded to be who/what we are today. We have made thousands of decisions to end up where we are and doing what we do. Some things have happened unexpectedly which was out of our control, but we are responsible for the majority things. Along the way, we have made both friends and enemies. We have been let down and have let others down. The country we live in dictates our ‘cultural-norm’ which we adapt and conform to ..read more
