The Antidote Is In The Poison: What Black Women Entrepreneurs Can Learn From Jay-Z   Pain and rejection seem to be the birthplace of innovation.    For people brave enough to chart their own course in life, these seemingly ’poisonous’ experiences only fan the flame of a dormant, inner fire that is stoked by another’s disbelief or proverbial “stiff arm.” It’s not to say that this brand of courage requires opposition, but it can help give some folks the necessary push to go forth on their own terms.    Billionaire Shawn Carter is the perfect case study on using rejection, to propel your career a ..read more

The Resilient Ones

I recently heard one of my favorite songs by THE LEGEND, Prince Rogers Nelson: The Beautiful Ones. If you’re a real one, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Classic. But listening to it, made me question to myself: What about The Resilient Ones? The people that somehow get up from life’s knock-down drag out moments. Devastation, shame, loss and embarrassment in their personal and/or professional lives. How is it that they rise again and again? The world is full of people comfortable with average and mundane lives and careers, with many flat-lining after defeat. But, not the resilient ones ..read more

I meet so many entrepreneurs who get stuck; they have great products and services and the potential to rake in the money they deserve but they hit a road block which keeps them stagnant and unable to move forward. Most of them are simple things that could be resolved and could mean the difference between making thousands of dollars and literally closing up shop. These are ten of the most common reasons that I’ve noticed that truly keeps persons from taking their business to the next level. Bad Habit #1:  Thinking social media is the answer to everything. While it’s a very useful tool, do not ..read more

This summer I had the opportunity to take my family to England, France and Spain for two weeks. It was amazing. Best experience by far and for the first international trip for the kids it was great. I was able to read two books in two weeks and my first Global Gradient Collective publication hit the press…that’s right I’m winning!     However, during this vacation, I watched my children “struggle” (in my view) to understand the social and societal cues of a foreign land.  They have met tons of family members, but when meeting new people they have the urge to show off and make their presence k ..read more

Ban the “Busy-ness” in Business

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve heard the term ‘I’m busy’. I swear as entrepreneurs we have so much to do in our business and our personal lives, it’s easy to get caught up. Many times, however, I have found that business owners aren’t actually as busy as they say they are, but get caught up in the ‘busy-ness’ of running a business. Allow me to explain. There is a difference between being busy and being in action, and while it may seem that there aren’t enough hours in the day, I can assure you that there is no need to be tired, frustrated and exasperated  from running down your never en ..read more

“I’m exhausted” I say in my head. It is 10pm and after an exhausting day of curriculum writing, being an uber for my kids (taking them to summer camp) and then trying to tire them out more the at the park and bowling…I am tired.. Oops but dinner isn’t done yet.  After whipping up some French Onion won-tons, FINALLY…Hello couch! Is sleep on my agenda? NOPE…Working is. Why you ask? Because I am an Entrepreneur. You see, I am a Teacher for Deaf children by trade. A rare low-incidence population within the schools, so surely I will ALWAYS get a job wherever I go. YUP! This is true, however that s ..read more

Have you heard the news? I’m a new mamma to a healthy and happy baby boy. This little man had a strong desire to be here, a full eighteen years after his older sister Yep, you read right…….EIGHTEEN FULL YEARS LATER!!!! Don’t ask why, just accept that he was meant to be here and, in homage to my dad I named him Malcolm. This pregnancy, however, did take a toll on me……who knew that being pregnant in your thirties was considered ‘old’. I was frequently in and out of the hospital with a plethora of problems…….that’s what I get for taking so long in between pregnancies I guess; but with even with ..read more

Gradient Global™ Collective is proud to celebrate June as National Caribbean American Heritage Month, by spotlighting black women entrepreneurs making strides. Admittedly, this one is personal, as my multi-talented and gifted father hails from the island of Trinidad & Tobago. Having been born and raised in one of the most diverse “salad bowls” in the world, New York City, I also went to school with, lived near and worked with some of the most beautiful and charismatic Caribbean people, as well as their first generation American offspring. But, don’t be fooled by the casual ease that radia ..read more
