The force is strong with this dress

Ahoy there! It’s been a while since I last blogged, but I’ve been busy sewing up a storm. Today I wanted to share with you my latest creation: a sailor collar vintage-inspired Star Wars dress! The inspiration for this dress came from my love for all things Star Wars and the quickly approaching May the Fourth Day. Just kidding, I know nothing about Star Wars and I did it all for clout and my love of sailor dresses. I have vaguely watched all the movies with various nerdy partners over the years and I somewhat remember the plot. Something about a Dark Invader, something about long glowsticks ..read more

Luck of the Irish

This is one of those dresses that has been on my mind for years. Honestly, look at my Pinterest, the inspiration has been there forever. Here’s one of the few variants of it I’ve found: It’s a sundress by the designer Lanz from the 60s I believe. That back is very much a signature of Lanz as it’s been used across other designs as well. I’m not quite daring enough to scoop out the back like that and what with living in Australia, I don’t fancy the tan lines either, so I adjusted the design a little for my rendition. I think I got relatively close! (Except for where I pleated the skirt instead ..read more

V-Necks for Valentine’s

Pow! It’s late, but here it is, my Valentine’s Day dress! I wear those same shoes every year when making V-day outfits but they’re just so good! Also in this case, the straps kind of mirror the chevrons in a really neat way so I guess it fits. I’m so terribly proud of this dress! It is kind of disappointing because it looks rather unremarkable (what’s interesting about another sleeveless v-neck dress?) but creating it was a labor of love (ha, get it?). As I assess these photos after the fact I can nitpick several things I would have done differently, but you know what, I’m still pretty chuff ..read more

Autumn Flowers

It’s me again! I made this dress quite a few months ago, back when it was Autumn in Australia. Now it’s Autumn in America so I figured I had to post photos at some point and there’s no better time than the present! I am exceedingly proud of this dress. I have lately taken to using more commercial patterns due to frustrations with my block. Now that I’ve made a block that fits great, I can’t stop tinkering with it and trying to make it better.  That doesn’t mean I’m slacking as a seamstress, mind you. I just prefer to think of it like dinner. Sometimes I don’t have the energy to cook a m ..read more

Chilling Adventures of Demi

Halloween rolled around again! I try and do a special dress or costume every year, not like I even need the excuse, but here we are. This year I’ve been pretty entranced by the wardrobe from the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I know it’s a pretty obscure costume and 99/100 people probably won’t get the reference, but it gave me great joy to replicate it, knowing that it was going to be a challenge, sewing-wise. So it’s really hard to photograph (and film) black. That’s one of the first things I learned about this project. Through a friend helping me to take screenshots of the dress througho ..read more

Oh So Blue

We can all feel a little bit blue sometimes. Some of us seemingly feel it harder than others. Whether you’re blue in the clinical sense or not, most people can empathize! Over the last few months, I feel like it’s been hitting me particularly hard and that’s why it’s been so hard to keep up with this blog. Who knows if anyone is still reading it anyways? I mean, I hope someone is still reading. At some level I do like sharing my work online. Nothing makes you feel more powerful than sharing a skill you enjoy both enjoy and excel in with others, especially if they also share those traits! I g ..read more

Blocking it out
Carbon Chic

I love using coordinating prints. When I saw this fabric on AliExpress, I knew I had to make some sort of colourblocked dress from it. But what?? Strangely enough, colour blocking does not feature as heavily as one would expect in vintage outfits. So I sat on this fabric for years and years until I was watching a rather fabulous show, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and I saw this beauty! Isn’t this dress just stunning? Of course it is made from some sort of silky fabric that I would ordinarily have no access too and it is more of a traditional colour block with solids instead of prints ..read more

Home is wherever I’m with you. It’s been a while, sorry about that! A lot of stuff has happened, and I can’t wait to share it with you. If you watch my streams, you’ll already know all the details, but if you don’t, I’ll be catching you up over the next few posts. Firstly: We got a house. We’ve been living in it for a few months and it is not without its challenges, but this is a big bucket list item for us both. It needed a little bit of work but it’s situated in a marvelous neighborhood and close to work and shopping, which is a massive plus. The internet situation isn’t as great as inner ..read more

Boo!

Uhhh, so I’m very late with this post, sorry about that. The issue isn’t that I was late to making this outfit–I wasn’t, I made this outfit on time for Halloween! The issue is that I’ve been having trouble with motivation to have long-winded writeups with each of these. That’s why you’re honestly much better off following me on Twitch.tv or Instagram. Even Instagram is getting a bit shaky recently. I realised I was feeling bad when I compared myself to other makers on Instagram so I had to wean myself off the platform a bit. I still post and I still respond to comments, I just try not to hit ..read more

When life gives you lemons..

It’s as good (bad?) time as any to make a dress. It’s been a strange and eerie moment on this timeline. The whole world (well, the sane part) is locked down due to the Corona virus and I honestly don’t remember living through something like this before. People are freaking out and there’s orders for restaurants and movie theatres being closed for a minimum 6 months. This is a world-changing event, you don’t just shut down entire industries without socioeconomic repercussions. The crafting industry is thriving though, and that’s what I’m trying to do as well. That includes copious amounts of ..read more
