Fujifilm X-H2S Review

The Fujifilm X-H2S—which since its introduction has been joined by the higher-resolution X-H2—is a fascinating successor to 2018’s X-H1. At that time, the Fujifilm X-H1 was an outlier in the Fujifilm X Series lineup. The camera was larger, featured a bigger grip and sported a large information display on top. It looked like a hybrid between the GFX series and the X Series. “Hybrid” is a fitting word since the X-H1 was also Fujifilm’s most “hybrid” camera yet. The new flagship camera was the first X Series camera to include in-body image stabilization and the first to record DCI 4K video with ..read more

After new flagship full-frame camera releases in 2021 from Canon, Nikon and Sony, 2022 was quieter on the full-frame mirrorless front, but there were some exciting introductions of smaller-sensor cameras. Full-frame models tend to draw the most attention, but there are advantages of APS-C and Micro Four Thirds sensors in terms of focal length magnification for wildlife and sports photography. Here are Outdoor Photographer‘s 10 favorite cameras and lenses of 2022 including our picks for Camera of the Year, Super Telephoto of the Year, Zoom Lens of the Year, and Wide-Angle Zoom Lens of the Year ..read more

Nikon Z 9: A Wild Opportunity

Bighorn sheep at Rocky Mountain National Park. To not disturb the wildlife, I often stayed pretty far away and used the Z 9’s DX crop mode to magnify my lens’s telephoto reach. Preproduction Nikon Z 9, AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR via Mount Adapter FTZ II. In the summer of 2021, I was rock climbing with my 10-year-old stepson, Miles, and my husband when I got a call from Nikon that put me in tears. For years, I have been promising Nikon, “If you give me a campaign, I will kill it.” I have always dreamed of having the newest technology in hand and creating content for a launch campaign a ..read more

Canon EOS R3 Review: Botswana Adventure

A male lion peering from the undergrowth at nearby impalas at sunrise. Canon EOS R3, Canon RF600mm F4 L IS USM. Exposure: 1/16000 sec., ƒ/4, ISO 1600. There are few things more painful to a photographer than missing a shot. We’ve all been there. You missed focus, you left your camera set in manual on all the wrong settings, your timing was off, or you just plain blew it. It happens, but there’s nothing worse than when it’s camera error. I’ve been shooting with mirrorless cameras since 2013, dating back to the Sony NEX-3. Clearly, a lot has changed since then, but until recently, major advanc ..read more

Superzoom Cameras For The Trail

An ideal option for long hikes when you don’t want to carry your full camera system, superzoom cameras are easy to stow in a day pack along with water, snacks, sunscreen and other trail essentials. Though their image sensors are smaller than those found in interchangeable-lens cameras, they make up for it with massive zoom ranges that can cover just about any scene. They’re also great as versatile backup cameras to hand off to family and friends for point-and-shoot photo opportunities, or for sports and wildlife photographers looking for an affordable way to get extreme telephoto perspectives ..read more

What Is Apple ProRAW?

Figure 1. Shot with the new iPhone 12 Pro Max using the Apple ProRAW format. Developed in Lightroom Classic. Introduced in the iPhone 12 Pro and the 12 Pro Max, Apple ProRAW is an entirely new file format that indicates where Apple is heading with its camera technology. Two years ago, I did something I never thought I would do. I wrote my first article about an iPhone, the XS Max, for this very publication. I never thought I would write such a thing because, truth be told, I’m a photo snob, and a proud snob, at that. I felt camera phones prior to the XS Max were crude toys reserved for those ..read more

Sony Alpha 1 Review: A True Flagship Camera

Sony’s full-frame mirrorless camera lineup includes a variety of models aimed at the unique needs of different users. The Sony a7R series provides the highest resolution, the Sony a7S series has the highest sensitivity and pixel-for-pixel 4K video, and the Sony a9 offered the fastest autofocus and continuous frames-per-second shooting when it was introduced. For my work, that meant I typically traveled with a7R series cameras for portraits and landscapes and an a9 for action. Switching between them was a reminder of the tradeoff between resolution and speed. Because of this, none of these came ..read more

Canon EOS R5 Review For Nature Photography
Outdoor Photographer | Cameras

A brief two years ago, we wrote about a significant breakthrough in photographic technology of particular interest to Canon users: the 30.3-megapixel, full-frame EOS R mirrorless camera. Here we offer a major update in the progression of the EOS R system with a review of the new 45-megapixel Canon EOS R5, two of its dedicated lenses perfect for wildlife photography—the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM and the RF800mm F11 IS STM—and other EOS R5 and EF lens combinations I use in my nature-oriented projects. Resting Hummer. The light weight and long reach of the EOS R5 and RF800mm F11 IS STM lens a ..read more

Hands On With The 40-Megapixel Leica M10-R
Outdoor Photographer | Cameras
by Text & Photography By Wes Pitts

I shot with the Leica M10-R on a bright day in the Angeles National Forest. Sunny conditions were an opportunity to photograph high-contrast scenes. In this image, I was able to recover substantial detail in the shadows of the foreground. The vast majority of new cameras today are marketed with an emphasis on their technology features. “AI” autofocus that can identify and track subjects, even the subject’s eyes as it moves about a scene, is just one example of an emerging technology that’s becoming a standard in the latest camera introductions. We’ve come to expect that a camera can more or ..read more
