Winston Air 2 “Dark Horse” Review

A great fishing rod has to cast great, but not every great casting rod is a great fishing rod. By Louis Cahill Back at, what proved to be, the last IFTD show, I cast the new Air 2 from Winston. I was blown away and I shot a video where Adam Hutchison and I talk about the rod. I will include that below. However, no matter how well a rod handles the casting pond, I will not write a review based on that. There’s a whole lot more that goes into a rod that fishes great than the cast. Especially when it comes to trout rods. I don’t own an Air 2 but my buddy Dan Flynn bought one recently, after I tol ..read more

By Louis Cahill The Simms Fall Run might be the most versatile jacket I own. I love my fall run jacket. I wear it all the time, on the water and off. If summers were not so hot where I live, I’d probably wear it year round. I’ve owned one for over ten years and it’s as durable as it is comfortable. watch this video review for all the details on the Simms Fall Run Jacket ..read more

The Stowaway Fly Reel Case from Fishpond: Review
Gink and Gasoline | Gear Reviews
by Louis Cahill

By Louis Cahill The Fishpond Stowaway reel case is a versatile piece of gear for the traveling angler. I’ve stored and carried my reels for years without a dedicated solution. The Stowaway reel case has changed that. This incredibly tough and versatile case makes traveling with fly reels and other gear a breeze. I also like storing my reels in the case for added protection. It’s a piece of kit I should have invested in years ago. You have to be careful when you update an industry standard like the G3 Wader. Fortunately, Simms knocked it out of the park. The new G3 waders take quality and design to the next level. I was, frankly, shocked at the look and feel of these waders. Every bit as nice as the G4 waders I have worn for years. If you've been putting off updating your waders, now might be the time. No-Tech Flats Boots
Gink and Gasoline | Gear Reviews

Want to do a little wading on the cheap? A few years ago I was fishing in the Bahamas with my friend Kirk Deeter. We stopped to get out of the boat and wade to some tailing bonefish and Kirk pulls out a pair of Converse All Stars. We grew up calling them Chucks but Kirk calls them flats boots. I couldn't help but see the brilliance of it. Kirk explained that he bought a pair of these cheap high tops when he was headed to the salt, wore them for the week, then pitched them. Not even flying home with dirty wet boots. Smart guy. So the next time I headed to the keys I made a stop at Target where ..read more

Scientific Anglers Amplitude Bonefish Line: Review

By John Byron Looking for the perfect bonefish line? Good luck. Ain’t no such thing. But a really good line for bonefish, those are out there in growing numbers.  With COVID kicking trips into next year and restricted access to the flats, the driven bonefish chaser then turns to gear. I did. In good shape on rods and reels, I set out to find the best flyline for my eight-weight.  I’ve found one I really like, Scientific Anglers Amplitude Bonefish with AST-Plus.  I have been fishing Rio lines and good they are.  Early days I fished the Bonefish Quickshooter — one weight heav ..read more

Keep your thirst quenched without the baggage
Gink and Gasoline | Gear Reviews

It's late spring and everyday we're moving one step closer to summer. Air temperatures are climbing into the 70s and 80s on most days and will soon be even higher. These conditions make it extremely important that anglers are staying properly hydrated while they're on the water fly fishing. I really enjoy hiking into remote locations to fly fish for trout. The only problem with me doing this, is I'm constantly fighting to quench my thirst and stay hydrated. I used to utilize packs with internal bladders for storing my drinking liquids, but there were quite a few disadvantages that came along w ..read more

By Louis Cahill Here's an unboxing and video review of the new RIO Slick Cast Coating and Technical Trout fly line. When I do product reviews, I generally test a product for months before writing the review. That insures that the review is thorough and thoughtful, but it takes a while and often, by the time it's done, a lot of folks have just bought the thing, So, today I'm trying something different. I'm testing the RIO Technical Trout fly line with the new Slick Cast coating live on camera. You'll get to see me take it out of the box and cast it for the first time. You'll get a frank an ..read more

Riversmith River Quiver: REVIEW
Gink and Gasoline | Gear Reviews
by Louis Cahill

For more than two decades I’ve done it the exact same way. Rise before the sun, chuck my waders, boots, and gear in a big plastic tub, and then toss my rigged-up rods inside the cab of my vehicle. The long, bumpy, unkempt roads of the southeast’s public lands wreaked havoc on my trucks. Those fragile fly rods that I haphazardly tossed through the back glass? Rod tips sliding across the dash. Blanks bouncing over the backseat. Most days I was just lucky they made it. There were plenty of unlucky days, though. Never did I think that I would find myself snapping off the tip of one of my fly rods ..read more
