Tim Marshall dropped in to our Marylebone shop to talk to Brett Wolstencroft about The Power of Geography, his fascinating new book and sequel to the phenomenal bestseller Prisoners of Geography.
You can see the video here, and signed copies are available here. Once again he takes ten maps and treats us to a sparkling discussion of those regions – from Australia to Space via the UK and the Sahel – that, driven by their geography, are set to shape the future. As ever it’s his insight, great storytelling and humour that illuminates his writing and leaves the reader feeling that, for a while at l ..read more

Alexander McCall Smith is one of our very favourite authors, and we are happy to say, a great friend of the shop. We have always read, loved and championed his books which are unfailingly warm, funny and wonderfully well-written.
Over the last few months, many of us have been stuck at home, and all of us have been getting used to our strange new reality. McCall Smith’s wisdom, kindness and wit are the perfect antidote to our current malaise. His talks at our Marylebone branch have become a yearly institution which we greatly look forward to. Hopefully we will soon be able to wel ..read more

This year, we received hundreds of entries for our Children’s Short Story Competition from talented young writers from all over the country. In a year that has been unexpected and at times challenging, we took solace in the stories we read, which were full of imagination and wonder. Through your words we’ve been transported from lockdown to faraway lands and new perspectives.
Congratulations to the 15 winners, aged five to fourteen whose stories will be published in this year’s anthology anthology.
We are also thrilled to announce that this year’s anthology will have an introduction by Patri ..read more

We are looking for a mix of booksellers, part-time (3 full days a week) and full time (5 full days a week), plus an extra person during weekends, for our new shop on Banbury Road opening at the start of 2020. Previous experience in bookselling is helpful but not essential; a good knowledge of customer service makes for a stronger candidate.
The daily requirements to look after a smooth running shop include unpacking deliveries, shelving, curating shelves and tables, creating inspiring window displays, dealing with accounts, but above all looking after customers, greeting them warmly and c ..read more
