I've moved my blog to powderach.com - head over there for new posts! I decided it was time I wrote the code myself. I'm using Gatsby and deploying via Github pages. My source code is here. I'll be (slowly) improving the new site and copying across old content from here. Marcus, this bit's for you... If anyone's following the RSS feed, the new one is here - please let me know if there are any issues with it ..read more

Recceing the North Downs Way
Powderach Running

Between Christmas and New year I almost recced the North Downs Way 50. It was a half plan that sort of fitted in with the holidays. We were down south anyway visiting my folks and trains were running. I booked a Travelodge in Dorking for the evening of Friday 27th December. After Lanzarote my knee was more sore than I wanted to admit but I hoped it would hold out. It felt much better after an emergency massage from Grant, and he taped my knee up for good measure. We bailed on the annual Boxing Day race due to bad weather and I ran alone instead, testing the knee. It didn't hurt on every step ..read more

Pre-Christmas adventures in Lanzarote

To continue my running tour of the Canary Islands I went to Lanzarote the week before Christmas. This was Will's first time to the Canaries and I hoped it would live up to everything I'd told him! Our first day on the island was my birthday. After a lazy breakfast we ran in the Parque National de los Volcanoes around the Caldera Blanca. It was hot, dry and dusty, on a largely flat trail with some detours up volcanic craters. We had one sketchy descent where our path disappeared and we had to scramble down the rock face. We stopped to enjoy a picnic lunch on a rock. The last few miles we ..read more

Highland 200
Powderach Running

The Highland 200 was a dream of Elaine's, inspired by the Highland 550 mountain bike route. The shortened running version was 200km over 4 days, taking in some of the most interesting parts of the Highlands. The original plan was for three of us to run and two others to support with driving, but of course it didn't work out quite like that. Sickness, childcare issues and injuries intervened and we tweaked the plan so that it just about hung together. Elaine would run, I would mountain bike, Janet would be car support and Tim and Jackie would join for the weekend to accompany Janet on adventur ..read more

Dolomiti Extreme Trail

Will and I signed up for the 23km race at the Dolomiti Extreme Trail to finish off a week of training (er, I mean a holiday) in the Dolomites. Having both eventually got our race medical certificates signed, we proudly presented them at registration where they were barely glanced at by the officials. We were a little put out, but soon got over it when we looked in the goody bag and saw that we'd each got 1kg of spaghetti. The race started in the main street of Forno di Zoldo. As we lined up on the start line we realised we'd both forgotten to put suncream on. It was still early but the sun w ..read more

Transvulcania 2019 - the build up
Powderach Running

You gotta have faith. You gotta trust the training.(And do the training). I'd wanted to run this race since the first time I opened Ian Corless' Running Beyond book. Transvulcania is the first entry. The jagged volcanic ridges scared and inspired me in equal measure. After failing to convince Will that we should honeymoon on La Palma (it is a pain to get to) I put it out of my mind for a few years. But 2019 is the year of doing big scary races abroad. Transvulcania was first on the list. Running in Tenerife over Christmas has both given me confidence that it was possible, and scared me further ..read more

Race morning started with a 3:30 am bus to Fuencaliente. I was too nervous to sleep on the bus, but this was reminiscent of last year's Fling and it hadn't mattered then. I ate overnight oats walking down to the lighthouse when we were dropped off. It was cold in the wind so I put on a super light waterproof jacket that I planned to carry with me and made sure I was in a good position for when the start pen opened. I wished I was in the elite pen, but no matter, when the main pen opened I got into a good position not too far back and stood like a sardine for an hour, refusing to give up my sp ..read more
