I'm thinking of getting more education in certain fields for technical writing but I was wondering if you think AI would make things difficult in the near future for tech writers, especially in certain fields like programming. submitted by /u/HaeL756 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Why would a manager be resistant to adopting a style guide?

In my current role, we do not have what I'd call a very thorough and helpful style guide. We have a page of maybe 15-20 grammar tips that are copy/pasted directly from Chicago Manual. And we "technically" are supposed to follow CMoS, but I am finding that very few people on the team are deeply familiar with the kinds of things CMoS contains, such that I'm very frequently pointing to it when I review documents for my teammates. And there are lots of things unique to our company/product/market that CMoS doesn't cover, yet we haven't recorded or standardized how to handle any of those things. Th ..read more

How to politely ask for contract of employment

I've had a job interview for a small scale company (UK based) that I know well (several former colleagues work there). The boss has generously offered me a job, but he sent the offer informally via text. I've accepted but I'm hesitant to tell my current employer until I have a more legally binding confirmation that I've got the job. How can I politely message the new employer asking for a contract of employment? submitted by /u/Logical-Safe2033 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Is it fair to expect to be promoted to team lead?

I've not quite been at this company a year yet. We used to be a team of 4 around December when we hired two people (one being a returning person). My boss was terrible and he finally got fired a month ago. Another person is leaving this month, but due to life circumstances. Things have been hectic and the last person (who I trained) is planning on leaving too. I've already had to train one person, and that was supposed to be my bosses job. Everyone is treating me as the defacto-boss, except I know that that's a position that makes at least 20k more than my current pay. I'm going to be expecte ..read more

Good introductory guides, textbooks, etc to technical writing?

Hey y'all! I skimmed through this reddit to find what I'm looking for, but didn't see anything recent, so I decided to make a post asking for help. What guides, textbooks, etc. would you all recommend as a good intro to technical writing? So far I've found "The Handbook of Technical Writing" by Alfred, Brusaw, and Oliu, which so far has been what I'm looking for. I've also got my hands on "The Product is Docs" by the Splunk Documentation Team, which is less beginner friendly. Context: I have a Creative Writing degree and have worked as an IT Technician for 4+ years. I'm trying to make a caree ..read more

Tips for an interview writing assessment?

I’ve got an in-person interview for a technical writing position tomorrow with a pretty large company. It’s an all day interview (like 9-2) with a 2 hour writing assessment and review, two back to back interviews, and a tour. I have never had to do a big writing assessment like this, let alone in person so I’m pretty nervous. Does anyone have any tips? I’ve been a technical writer for about 5 years (graduated in 2019 and an engineering masters in 2021) but have mostly worked on different contracts where the interview process wasn’t this in-depth. I feel like I’m going to take the SAT or GRE a ..read more

Thinking about becoming technical writer

I have a degree in English, but never really used it. I do, though, write as a hobby, and at this point, I’m tired of working service jobs. Technical writing seems like something I’d enjoy doing as a career. I’d love to freelance at some point, but I think I’m going to start with lower paying contractors for some experience. One thing I’ve been noticing is that a lot of the job descriptions ask for related experience that the company specializes in (e.g. 8 years+ in shipbuilding, 4+ in engineering, etc.). Do I really need in-depth technical expertise for technical writing? submitted by /u/go ..read more

Is there a course for it or are books enough? I hear some people who graduate in technical communication learn about in a structured enviroment. I also don't do well with free learning and would prefer a structured learning environment if possible. Thank you! submitted by /u/AdNo507 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
