It feels good to turn the page on 2021 and say welcome to 2022. First, I want to say thank you to anyone who purchased my latest Calendar Poster Series. We introduced this concept last year, so some of you may be familiar with our approach to making a calendar something you can use even after the month has passed. With a new year comes new art, of course. And some simple suggestions for how to make the most of your Stephanie Schlatter Art calendar poster series by creating a gallery wall. Art is for everyone and living with art will change your life. This is fundamental to my ‘why’ as a business owner. I started to collect art before I bought my first new couch because art brought me more joy. I am always searching for ways to keep art accessible to all in new and better ways. This is why I am so excited about the new Summer 2021 shop collection launch. I’ve partnered with two companies to make this happen. Last fall I started to have my art professionally scanned by Vada Color of Traverse City and the quality of my reproductions changed dramatically. Everything in the Summer ..read more

The Future is Female

Representation matters. It is truly amazing when you look at the list of US Presidents and not a single woman’s face stares back at you. The history of art is similar. Name 5 famous female artists. You can, of course, but even for an art history buff like myself, I have to think. The thinking is painful because women have always been creative, always made art. It’s just the systems were not set up to support them or the art they made. I could go on, the list is endless but the point is society and decision-makers have historically been super dominated by one particular kind of American- white ..read more

The Endless African Sky

Just so easy to find inspiration everywhere! I miss the smell of eucalyptus and the high mountain air. The rolling hills that seem to go on for just about as far as that endless and entertaining African sky above it. Some shepherds I met. They were happy to get a Polaroid of themselves and so curious as to what I was doing! I miss Ethiopia. The bouncy smiling children calling out to say hello. The chiming of cow bells coming up behind us as we painted by the sides of the roads, nearly devoid of vehicles. People and cattle rule these roads — people who had never seen plein air paintings bef ..read more

Rural Ethiopia and the Plein Air Experience

After a flight and a overnight in Jimma, we began the long, long truck ride to Maji. This was our first glimpse of Maji in the distance from the truck. Waking up in Maji on that first morning, the birds’ song wafting through my open window, I popped out of bed to see the view. The air was thin, like the mountain air that it was, and carried the strong smell of eucalyptus. We had arrived in darkness the night before leaving us, with an air of suspense. Was it as I remembered? Sunset over Maji. The sky was lighting up, and I grabbed my art supplies and headed out to paint. This was a habit t ..read more

Everything You Need to Bring to Paint Outdoors

Everything I bring with me when painting plein air. For years, I claimed I was a studio painter and I didn’t like to paint outside. But the truth was, I loved to paint outside — I just hadn’t figured out how to make it less frustrating. It took so long to set up, and then the wind would blow my canvas over, or my palette would flip over, getting dirt in my paint. But the desire to keep painting outside kept beckoning me. I kept trying. It took years before I found a system that truly worked for me, and I couldn’t be happier. Plein air painting has become a joy I would not want to live w ..read more

Practicing with Intention

Creating a value study from a photo. I prefer doing these from life, but in a pinch I’ll work from a photo. Have you ever noticed things that don’t always turn out how you want or imagine? If you’ve ever made art, you can relate. The thing is, if you practice anything, you get better. Yet, we all have the proverbial aunt who knits the same lopsided sweaters for years … (Thanks Auntie Em, but no thanks.) The difference is about intention. You have to practice with intention. Make art with joy, but also with a critical eye. There have been days, weeks, months, when frustration with the process ..read more

Inside the Studio

All of the paintings in this blog are from a series of 5×5 and 6×6 oil paintings all exploring the same idea. Using a similar subject, I’m exploring what can be done with different color combinations and brush work. Opportunities abound inside the studio. Half of the year, in the warmer months, I spend most of my time outside working in plein air. There are so many opportunities for learning and growing in on location painting. However, there are a lot of distractions as well. Some are happy distractions, like wildlife coming to visit, the song of the birds and people passing by for a quick ..read more

Extra Special Fall

It seems like an extra special fall. The colors seem more intense than ever before. It’s been soul food for me. Nature has always been my greatest teacher and comforter. Life’s hard, no question about it. But it’s also so beautiful at times that I can hardly stand it. I can only speak from my own experiences, but I’ve found current events very difficult. The hearing of our newest Supreme Court Justice opened up old wounds for many, including myself, about our own traumas. And when trauma is opened up, it’s like re-experiencing it. I’ve been distracted and sad for my nation. My art has never c ..read more
