I have a question, regarding the aim of dispassion in Holy Orthodoxy

Our aim is to be freed from our sinful passions and reach, if God wills it, an angelic dispassionate state. But if we ought to imitate heaven here on earth and in this fallen body of death, why do we have to abstain with pain and suffering from pleasures when heaven itself is full of pleasures? If heaven itself is full of sweetness, joy, ecstasy, why do we abstain from everything joyful to reach a state of heaven, although heaven itself is full of it? submitted by /u/sinfulbeggar [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Guys(and gals), I hope you are having a good lent so far. This question troubles me for a while now and I am starting to realize how wrong is my view on the human person hood. I have started recently to realize that our mind is actually a faculty of our soul and has been given to us by God and does not come from the brain. Can someone try to explain how the mind and the brain are different from each other and how do they work together. This is a radical thing for me to realize that our mind and the thoughts that come from it are separate from the brain in terms of source submitted by /u/kala ..read more

I am 16 years old and started researching Christianity at around 14 years old. Prior to my conversion to Christianity, I was practicing Islam. I have looked into orthodoxy, and I feel as if it is most in line with what the Bible teaches. Due to this, I want to join the church and become an orthodox Christian. However, despite living in the west, I come from a strict Muslim family that takes their faith very seriously, and because of this, I cannot visit a church. I understand that I cannot hide my faith forever and that I have to come out one day. Please pray that I may have the strength to d ..read more

Hello, I have Autism, the loud noises, big crowds, and the staying still for 3 hours is giving me quite bothersome Panic Attacks. I can't shuffle around to alleviate stress or else people will think im crazy, and I don't want to leave church mid-service. Does anyone have a method to help me out? I go to a huge church so will a smaller church be better for me? Don't bother asking me to tell my priest because he disappears after the service is over. I was watching a debate with the Catholic and Orthodox guy and the Catholic guy said that one of the founding fathers of the Orthodox Church one of the saints or a father of the Orthodox Church said that if you don't venerate the icons you will go to hell. Is this true or is this nonsense? submitted by /u/AdrianOfficialMusick [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I know alot of evangelicals say "Jesus's name is very powerful against the demons", is this true? Are demons afraid of the name "Jesus Christ"?. How do we resist ourselfs from demonic opression/temptations, read scripture? Pray? Etc?. Do demons hate it when we pray and read scripture?. Do demons attack you more or less when you pray? Thats really about it. submitted by /u/Boring_Forever_9125 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Do you think Jordan Peterson and his ideas are helpful or harmful to Orthodoxy?

I tend to think the latter; that he and his ideas are harmful to Orthodox (and by extension all Christian) minds. Seven years ago I was an avid follower of his and it was actually his articulation of God that brought me to my faith (I was a non-believer until 2017). However, once I crossed that threshold into believing in Christ, his ideas didn't resonate with me as much and I could see clearly where he was wrong; his ideas are very heterodox and even gnostic at times. Don't get me wrong, I am grateful that he led me to Christ. I think his message is positive for nonbelievers. I am concerned ..read more

I John, your brother and partner with you in the oppression, and [in the] Kingdom, and [in] perseverance in Christ Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day and I heard behind me a loud voice, like a trumpet saying, “What you see, write [it] in a book and send [it] to the seven Churches; to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.” I turned around to see the voice that had spoken to me. Having done so, I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the seven lampst ..read more
