Veeam Temporary Snapshots preventing VM from any operation, even though they have been "successfully deleted". Help?

In vCenter, I wanted to migrate a VM to other host, but was prevented because there were old Veeam temp backup snapshots. I clicked delete all, it finished successfully. Here's the problem: They still show up in snapshots. I can't delete them, can't start or move the VM, can't do anything really. I tried clicking "Delete All" and "Delete Snapshot" individually, but now I have a bunch of stuck snapshot deletion tasks that I can't cancel. Any help with this? EDIT: Turns out vCenter played a trick on me, and showed the task as complete even though it wasn't (in Chrome). Logging into vcenter on a ..read more

DHCP query returns different Server IP from same computer name.

Good day all, When I recently ran the Powershell command listed below two times in a row (several min appart) in our Domain. I received a different ServerIP even though the computer name is the same. We have 2 DCs that are currently set to load balance. Does the ServerIP indicate which DHCP server handed out the IP? Also, the DnsRR property returns a different result as well. Does this seem normal? If not, what should I be investigating? I marked the differences in bold. DC01 IP is .2 DC02 IP is .9 Get-DhcpServerv4Lease -ComputerName DC01 -Scope 123.12.123.0 | Where-Object -Property Clien ..read more

I feel like I’ve backed myself into a corner that I can’t escape

Just for some background, I started in IT at 16 years old as an intern for my high school. I was hired at 18 and started full time 2 days after I graduated as a full time technician. I eventually got promoted to an access control / security tech and got a nice bump in pay. I worked in that position for roughly a year and a half to two. From there I moved districts and I’m now a system administrator. Here is the issue… I have 0 education and 0 certifications. I am working on A+, net+ and sec+ just so I can be more appealing on paper. I don’t want to work in education forever. I’m sure as some ..read more

Owner of company I was consulting with passed away

The HR Coordinator of a small company I occasionally do some network consultancy informed me that the owner of the company/IT guy unexpectedly passed away yesterday. He was managing the servers, Office 365 and was the only domain admin for the company. Fortunately for them, years ago I was also given domain admin role as I helped the owner setup RADIUS/NPS for the firewall VPNs and am able to reset his password and sign-in with his account in Office 365. Now, they are asking me to grant the other Sr. Partner access to his mailbox and create a forwarding rule. I will be having a Teams meeting ..read more

USB write kiosk

I work at an enterprise where we have disabled USB write access across all of end user PCs in the name of data loss prevention. However, there are some cases where someone does need to write something to a flash drive / sd card, and so we have to exempt them, have them reboot their PC (usb write block is managed via Intune), have them write whatever it is they wanted to write, and then block their USB access again. That's a slow and painful process for both our users and admins. What I was thinking of doing is setting up a write kiosk where users can upload files to and then come up and to it ..read more

Securely wipe NVMe?
Reddit : sysadmin

Hi there, what's the best procedure to wipe a NVMe storage device? It needs to be 100% forensically safe. Old method in my company is Debian Live + dd with if=/dev/zero or urandom, but I'm aware that this makes little sense on a drive with load balancing, so I want to establish a new procedure. I did some research and learned that there are other options, do these (in this order) make sense? Tools distributed by the hardware manufacturer - given storage is made by WD, and they don't offer a tool for Linux. So maybe I skip this? [dd zeroes and urandom here (optional but not that effective ..read more
