WARNING: triggering content. Hey, I’ve been a paramedic of 24 years. Started my career in Sydney and now work in regional NSW. As you can imagine I’ve had good jobs and bad jobs. Meet some great people and some not so great. Recently I’ve taken up the role of Station Officer and this has reinvigorated me into the job. I feel I am well respected by my colleagues and often get contacted for clinical advise and support. Apart of my treatment ethos I try to be empathic but honest. I give my honest opinions and don’t try to sugar coat anything. About 18months ago I went to a pretty bad MVA, head o ..read more

Hey guys! So I'm a Senior, and a graduation requirement is presenting a Capstone topic. I decided to do it based on Paramedic Burnout, and how we as a community can bring awareness. I joined this subreddit so I could have testimonies from Paramedics all over the nation. I'd appreciate it if some of you guys could answer any of these questions below! 1) Has there been any instances where you've been harrassed by patients or coworkers? 2) As a student/trainee were you ever compelled to steer into a different field? 3) Do you personally feel that there are enough resources to help Paramedics? 4 ..read more

Testicular pain with head strike

Hey guys! I’m an Aussie student paramedic. I attended a 9 y/o boy who had a pretty significant head strike on some playground equipment with associated nausea, headache, minor LOC, and a laceration to the head. What peaked my curiosity is he was experiencing some testicular pain as well. Does anybody know if a head strike could cause this or could it be just an incidental kind of thing? I know of neuropathic pain with TBI, but could neuropathic pain come from a concussion or other? I assume of course it’s not pertinent to treatment plan etc, but thought it would be interesting to know. submi ..read more

Best way to notify medical personnel of religious needs in an emergency?

Just as I've seen that "baby on board" signs aren't actually helpful in a wreck, it's come to mind lately that a visor clip that says, "I'm Catholic, in case of an accident please call a priest" or other similar religious requests would be much the same - completely useless and disregarded. My question is, is there any way to make clear, in the case of a life-threatening accident, any religious end-of-life preferences? Or would that be something better left up to the emergency contact or hospital to take care of? submitted by /u/missalyssafay [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

The latest version of obwatch has just gone live with US based drug lists and measurements. We are also looking for anyone from the US who might be interested in helping us to build-in specific code timers along with other elements that may help especially where MDTs are not prevalent…please reach out if you are an enthusiastic Apple Watch user…? submitted by /u/ticketyboos [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

What is the response to a pool drowning?

Hi, UNITED STATES I’m a filmmaker writing my next film, and there is a scene where someone is “found” dead in the pool of a luxury beach house. They were murdered / drowned by someone else at the house. When someone calls to report a death in their pool, and in this instance let’s say there is no reason to believe anything malicious, who shows up? Again, this person is actually dead in the pool, assumed to have fallen in or swam very drunk and drowned. Obviously paramedics, probably 1 or two police officers and coroner. Does a detective come out as well just to eliminate all possibility of so ..read more

Any recommendations on podcasts, websites, youtube channels for keeping up knowledge after school?

I just recently finished medic school and have been working as a medic for 2 months now. I feel comfortable in my skills and knowledge but I am always feeling like I need to keep studying like in school. I love learning so this isn’t a task for me, more like keeping my knowledge up to date. Does anyone have easy recommendations for what they use? Preferably something that doesn’t break the bank with subscriptions. Thank you! submitted by /u/Spiritual-Maize-1436 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Is JIBC a good school? Pros and cons?

I am leaning towards JI to get my PCP certification but I just had some questions about the school, hoping people who attended can give me insight and peace of mind. My main concern is that I heard they have a “3 strikes and you’re out policy, does that apply to if you fail 3 exams you automatically fail the course? Or do they mean if you fail a scenario in class 3 times then you fail the course? I also heard instructors are quite strict and I’m just wondering if they are hard on students constantly, or if they will help you if you say you don’t understand the material. I don’t want to worry ..read more

What classes can I take to get some good medical knowledge?

I am not a paramedic and don't plan on entering any sort of medical field. However I would like to be bale to have a good amount of medical knowledge like stopping severe bleeding, I know tourniquet or packing with pin point pressure but I'd like to get actual practice under an instructor. I'd also like to learn some other things like CPR and what not. What reputable companies do this kinda thing in person (ie like the red cross)? What classes can I take a get a good solid amount of knowledge without being dedicated to the medical field? submitted by /u/bored1122334455 [visit reddit] [commen ..read more
