Pipestone Area School head softball coach Robert Petersen and Russell-Tyler-Ruthton skipper Darren Baartman were Viking teammates back when Ruthton was on its own. The pair also won a national fastpitch softball title (sanctioned by the Amateur Softball Association) together as the Ruthton Rookies in 1986 at Sioux Falls, S.D. Both coaches have carried this love of fastpitch to a couple of talented teams, and that competitive spirit was on display as PAS rallied to beat R-T-R 3-2 in an instant classic fans will remember at Paulsen Field on Monday, April 15. “We found a way to get on base,” Pet ..read more

The Pipestone Area Schools baseball program finally put some demons to bed during an 11-6 victory over Luverne in Big South Conference action Monday, April 15. Nohel Vivanco pitched well enough for the win and the triumvirate of Landon Quist, Weston Reinhard and Xavier Banjoko all scattered two hits as the Arrows generated 12 of them in an 11-6 conquest over the Cardinals at Westview Park. “Since 2017, it was PAS 0-16, being outscored 130-40 and eliminated three times from the playoffs by Luverne,” PAS head coach Ryan Koopman noted. “We beat a great team, easily the best win in my two years a ..read more

WORTHINGTON — The Pipestone Area Schools boys golf program handled brutal conditions well enough for a second-place finish at the Worthington Invitational Saturday. The Arrows accumulated 362 strokes as a team, which was 15 strokes more than host Worthington. Lac qui Parle Valley rounded out the top-three schools with a 365, and Russell-Tyler-Ruthton scored 405 for eighth position. “Obviously, the weather had a significant influence on our scores,” PAS head coach Craig Boeddeker noted. Boeddeker was inclined to say the cold temperatures — which barely topped the low 40s — and gusty winds adde ..read more

Lush music and bicycling can have a strange yet symbiotic relationship. While watching the 1979 cycling movie, “Breaking Away,” there’s a breathtaking soundtrack featuring Felix Mendelssohn and Giachino Rossini. Dave Stohler (played by Dennis Christopher), the lead character in “Breaking Away,” is obsessed with cycling — mainly the Italian team because he won a Masi-brand bicycle. Stohler serenades his girlfriend, Katherine, by singing the Friedrich von Flotow area “M’Appari Tutt’Amor,” with his friend Cyril (played by Daniel Stern) accompanying on guitar. That piece also has been covered by ..read more
