Photo by Maddie Malhotra/Boston Red Sox/Getty Images Let’s take the series Day game alert! Red Sox vs Cleveland Guardians. First pitch at 1:10 PM ET on WEEI and NESN and MLBN for out-of-market viewing. Quick hits: Masataka Yoshida is on the bench again. Devers will DH Chase Anderson did have a few starts in 2023 of up to 7.0 innings but this is probably a bullpen affair unless he has an amazing pitch count. Rafaela is our shortstop? Keep this up and get the bat going and Trevor Story will be obsolete in 2025 ..read more

Photo by Maddie Malhotra/Boston Red Sox/Getty Images Okay, so he didn’t get the triple... but putting a three-run performance in those terms is fun, isn’t it? Worcester, Game 1: L, 3-5 (BOX SCORE) The WooSox kicked off their series against the Mud Hens (Tigers Triple-A) at 11:00 AM. By noon, Chase Meidroth had gotten on base twice. Worcester’s closest thing to the kid from the Goonies besides. — well, you know what abominable statue — ended up getting a third hit later in the game. Sadly, it was Richard Fitts’ poor early going that solidified game one of the double header, and by the end of f ..read more

Trust the Process with Ceddanne Rafaela

Photo by Joe Sargent/Getty Images We are watching a superbly talented young player figure it out before our eyes—enjoy it. Rookie years are hard. There are many reasons for this, maybe chief among them is that baseball is inherently a game of failure. A good hitter fails to get on base 65% of the time. A bad hitter can suffer a far worse fate. Right now Ceddanne Rafaela is in the midst of an extremely difficult rookie season where he is failing to get on base 79% of the time. While it’s impossible to argue that Rafaela isn’t struggling (he has a 35 wRC+ and a slash line of .171/.213/.293) I’m ..read more

Photo by Ron Schwane/Getty Images It’s going rather well this time Happy Thursday. After an amazing win last night the Red Sox and Cleveland Guardians will be back in action early: it’s a 1:10 PM ET start. Chase Anderson will get the start against Triston McKenzie. Will Tyler O’Neill, Rafael Devers, and Masataka Yoshida all be in the lineup together once again? We’ll see! Remembering 2004 Twenty year ago the Sox were in the midst of a losing streak. They’d just been swept by the Texas Rangers and lost game one in Cleveland 2-1 as Curt Schilling was out-dueled by Jake Westbrook. That dropped Bo ..read more

The Anatomy of An Inning: Tanner Houck’s Encore in Cleveland

Photo by Ron Schwane/Getty Images The Red Sox pitcher has a new arsenal. And it’s getting the job done. Welcome back to another edition of The Anatomy of An Inning. My name is Jacob Roy, and I pretend to know pitching better than the pitchers themselves. If you’re new here or need a reminder of what this is all about, I take an inning from the previous week or so and break it down, one pitch at a time. Each pitch should have a purpose, I’m looking at each individually to try to go beyond the box score and tell the full story. It’s Tanner Houck week inside my brain! That’s right, I was so convi ..read more

Red Sox 8, Guardians 0: The Connor Wong Game

Twice! | Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports The Sox catcher goes deep twice in a decisive victory. The Red Sox beat the piss out of the Guardians on Wednesday night behind Cooper Criswell and Connor Wong, bringing their season series to 4-2 on a breezy night by Lake Erie. The top of the first started fortuitously, with the red-hot Wilyer Abreu driving in Rafael Devers to put the Sox on the board: Wilyer Abreu now has an RBI in each of his last six games and has 3+ hits in three of his last five games He was batting just .176 a week ago, now he’s up to .316#DirtyWaterpic.twitter.com/JrqZtVFlca — Rot ..read more

Photo by Brian Fluharty/Getty Images Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper again We’ll start with the bad news: Brayan Bello to the IL with right lat tightness. Zack Kelly is up. — Chris Cotillo (@ChrisCotillo) April 24, 2024 The good news? Rafael Devers is in the lineup! What do they need tonight? Obviously more bats than yesterday. But really: the Red Sox need innings. Criswell went 4.0 innings against the Los Angeles Angels but lasted just 2.1 against these same Cleveland Guardians last time out allowing 4 runs (1 earned) on 55 pitches. If Andrew Bailey has any fairy dust left he needs to sprinkle som ..read more

David Richard-USA TODAY Sports Reps are exactly what this prospect needed to wake up in the 2024 season. When Tyler O’Neill went on the IL with a concussion on April 18th (retroactive to April 16th), a collective groan could be heard across New England, from the forests of Maine to the shoreline of Connecticut (if we count any corner of Connecticut a part of the region). The Red Sox were down ANOTHER top producer. At the time, O’Neill not only led the team in homers, but the entire Majors, with seven. Tied with a resurgent Mike Trout. This opened up a giant hole in the outfield, one we knew wh ..read more

Photo by Justin K. Aller/Getty Images Triston Casas fractures a rib with no timetable to return. The bad news was coming eventually. At no point since Triston Casas abruptly left Saturday’s game against the Pirates had we heard anything remotely hopeful. There was no mention of precautionary measures, no “we’ll give him a few days to see how he feels,” no wishful talk of him grinding it out if it were the postseason. This was a bad one. Yesterday we were put out of our misery: an MRI revealed that Triston Casas fractured a rib while taking a swing during his first at-bat in Pittsburgh. There i ..read more

Photo by Ron Schwane/Getty Images Guard against those homers Happy Wednesday. Last night was another mostly stellar outing from Tanner Houck but a hit here and there turned the game over to the Cleveland Guardians. The Red Sox sit at 13-11 as they send Cooper Criswell against Carlos Carrasco tonight at 6:10 PM ET once more. Vaughn Grissom, rehabbing with the WooSox, has four. hits in 18 plate appearances. Not lighting the world on fire but, if he’s healthy, he can probably get up to speed at the plate in Boston, right? Since his career .287/.339/.407 would look pretty nice about now.
