Lady McElroy is one of the biggest growing trends in the Australian & New Zealand sewing community and there are so many reasons why. They have an amazing collection of prints ranging from florals, geometric, abstract to bright modern and quirky, the range is endless. My personal favourites are sketching in class and anything with bugs! Lady McElroy is known for having high quality bases cloth with the standouts being cotton lawn and viscose challis, which is what Seamstress Fabrics stock. However, I don’t stock everything as the range is just too big and I frequently get asked where to bu ..read more

Ways to copy a garment.
Seamstress Fabrics

Last time I blogged here, I told you about why I love to copy garments. This time I am going to tell you about some of the ways you can actually do it. But before you start copying a garment I do have a few warnings! Warning one: It takes time to copy a garment. Unless there is something you really like about the garment, such as the fit or a particular feature, consider whether it is time well spent. I really like a particular set of my pyjamas. But I’m not especially attached to them and I have seen a well-reviewed pattern out there that is very similar so I’m going to give the pattern a try ..read more

They don’t come along very often, but occasionally one finds that rare thing – the perfect garment. It’s the piece of clothing that people always comment on when you wear it; telling you how much it suits you or how fine you look today. And it is the garment you remember long after you’ve worn it out or passed it on. Can you think of a garment like that? The first thing you probably remember is what colour it was. The start of a new year tends to bring about resolutions, goals and endless lists. For me I subscribe to the latter two for most areas in my life and sewing is no different. Although for the most part I am a stay at home mum, I also volunteer, have a very active social life, do lots of life stuff, and I work hard in my little business, so I find my sewing time quite limited.  To make the most of it, I'm putting together a list of items I want to sew for the year. I plan to print out a spreadsheet of these projects and display them in my sewing area, I'm hoping this will give me some accountabi ..read more

Recycling and waste minimisation in our home has been on my mind for a while now and I want to bring this across to Seamstress Fabrics. So from 2020, or whenever our current supply of poly mailer bags run out, we will be replacing them with cornstarch compostable bags. It will also mean reducing the use of large zip lock bags we use to send out our orders. I have thought about taking them out all together, but as a micro business owner, I'm worried about damaged goods in transit, I admit, it is not a perfect solution, but a compromise for now.  Where I can, I will always reuse the original pac ..read more
