Weather models, I don't know what I don't know- please tell me.

The agriculture company I work for is looking at various weather service companies. One of the companies claims that they use "up to 40 models" on the data they would collect from a s sensor that we would place in the area of interest. Our company has production locations in many cities with relatively close weather stations so we don't really see the need for purchasing an on-site sensor unless we wanted to keep tabs on microclimates- which we don't really need (we have frost prevention wind machines that have their own sensors to turn them on). Will private models be better than what the go ..read more

What creates the horizontal banding on shelf clouds?

I’m trying to understand the formation and structure of shelf clouds. From watching timelapse footage it seems like cold air is flowing down and outward from behind the cloud from and pushing warm air upward. Is that correct? Are the banded structures formed by the warm air that’s being pushed upward and forward by the front? They look a bit like folded compressed fabric but also similar to lenticular clouds, just trying to figure out how to model them correctly. submitted by /u/circular_sawfish [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Question about pressure, temperature, and global circulations

My textbook says that warm air is associated with high pressures or higher heights of pressure surfaces and cool air with lower. I'm confused because for the global circulation there is low pressure at the equator due to more solar heating. It makes sense that warm air is less dense and should have lower pressure. I get that technically the height of pressure surfaces of warm air are higher because it expands more. But why am I being taught that on a constant height or pressure chart lower pressures are associated with colder air? Also, if air flows from higher to lower pressure, why does low ..read more

30 year Predictions for Puerto Rico / Tropical islands?

I’m not educated on this topic. I noticed how similar the sub-island, Culebra, was to Tenerife. Desert island with desert vegetation type vibe. In PR, we get sand storms from the east. All the way from the Sahara. Can’t help but wonder how much biological matter/data the dust can carry. PR’s vegetion is a dark green free for all. Culebra = a tiny Tenerife. Desert veg, drier soil. Vieques (about an hour south by boat) resemble’s it’s mother. Thick, green, and aggressive. I’m willing to bet, these lifeforms are evolving at rates we never believed they were capable of. The part that worries me ..read more

Currently going over my atmosphere notes and I found these but I can't remember what they're referring to exactly. They are some kind of winds but not sure which exactly. submitted by /u/Wholesome_Boye [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hello everyone! I've recently become interested in meteorology due to the ongoing drought in Barcelona, where I live. I'm specifically eager to understand how cloud formation relates to meteorological fronts and isobars. I would really appreciate any explanations or insights on this topic. Thanks!
