#Vanlife: Ways of Monetizing on the Road
Home Sweet Van
by Juliana Linder

There's a lot of speculation out there about how people like us have done what we've done. More specifically how we've financed our lifestyle. Everything from "they must get paid by brands loads of money to travel" to "they're just trust fund babies living off of their parents".  And haha! Don't we wish everything was that cut and dry. At this point, we've heard it all. But would like to set the record straight about how we got to where we are now, as well as other ways that people we've met along the way monetize. And no, we don't really care what the "haters" think. This post isn't really ab ..read more

Sprinter Van for Sale
Home Sweet Van

This van was sold on September 17th, 2017. Thanks for your interest!!!! In the next couple of months, though not immediately (because it's our home) we'll be selling our 2002 140” wheelbase Sprinter. It's gotten a lot of love! We bought it with 180k miles on it. It now has 215k on it! We traveled with it all across the American West: from Arizona to Montana, up to British Columbia, down the west coast to Baja, Mexico. It's seen all sorts of terrain and weathered them all. We've gotten in tight situations, but always gotten out. We love this van, and hope that the next owner will love it just a ..read more

Took a weekend trip to shake off some of the bad feelings from this past week. Having the van broken into was such a huge bummer. But we were happy to be able to spend some quality time on on this calm and beautiful beach just north of Nine Palms. Can't wait to get back ..read more

Thoughts: Things I've learned after a year in the van
Home Sweet Van

In honor of our departure from the Bay Area, almost exactly 365 days after setting sail on our journey, I want to share some big takeaways. One of the biggest being that reflection is one of the most important of those things I've learned. To reflect and then learn from myself and my experience. So here are some reflections: 1. Documenting your journey is great, until it starts to take away from your experience There's that famous saying most of us know: "a picture is worth a thousand words". Nowhere is that more true than on Instagram, where short captions attempt to explain what little a pho ..read more

Thoughts: Misconceptions about Mexico
Home Sweet Van
by Juliana Linder

Thanks largely to the recent election, and also to the media in general, the entire country of Mexico has been painted in a deep shade of black that's hard to rub off from the other side of the border. There are a lot of misconceptions and misunderstandings plaguing the US right now, and the ones surrounding Mexico are big too. Since we arrived in Baja, we've gotten a lot of questions via Instagram about safety down here. It seems a lot of people are concerned or have been scared into thinking that driving down into Mexico, even Baja, is like driving into a nightmare. I'll even admit that when ..read more

Thoughts: Self-Love on the Road
Home Sweet Van

This one's for the ladies. It's a letter to those of you who are inspired to hit the road and not. I'm writing this to share with you how this lifestyle, living out of a van, has brought me to love myself a whole lot more than I used to, and I want to share it with all of you in case you're feeling stuck like I've been for so, so long. This isn't to say that all of these problems are gone forever. But in the grand scheme, they've shrunk down exponentially. In the end, nothing's perfect, but my eyes feel a whole lot wider than they used to be.  Maybe I'll start with something that happened rece ..read more

Roscoe and I lock up the van and head down the trail, avoiding puddles that were born the previous night. At the edge of the cliff, I hop over a fence to snag a photo of the lighthouse in the distance. Roscoe whimpers. He’s not a fan of heights, and also not a fan when mom is being risky. But I snap the shop and hop back over, quickly, so I don’t have to leave him for very long. Back on the trail, we head into the trees. Stringy lichen hang down like curtains. Moss clings to the trunks. The wood chips and tree matter that l ..read more

Vignette: Blue Pool
Home Sweet Van

The forest is tucked into a thick blanket of moss. Roscoe runs ahead, scouting the route and looking back every once in a while to make sure we’re still behind him. He's happy and dirty and smelling all of the smells. We set out on the two miles to find the Blue Pool. Things start out green and lush. As we get deeper onto the trail, the leaves being to change: reds, oranges, and yellows ignite the trees around us. They look like bursts of flame, like subtle reminders of the forest fire that happened close by not long ago, just across the cr ..read more
