Choosing between 2 mirrored apartments

Hi all, first time posting here. I'm about to buy an apartment on the 9th floor out of 11. There are 2 identical mirrored apartments, as you can see in the below floor plan. One in red (left side) and another in blue (right side). I'm planning to get the one in red as I'm thinking the balcony will get a bit more light than the one in blue, which is partially shaded by the other adjacent balconies. Compass visible on the top of the floor plan. Is there anything to consider when making this decision? For example, the apartment on the left starts with the living room on the left and the bedr ..read more

I am moving to a different state for 5 months and I need help deciding what kind of bed to get. I won’t be able to keep whatever bed situation I end up buying, so I don’t want to spend a lot of money on it. I also don’t want to be uncomfortable. Bed Frame & Real Mattress: Pros- Comfortable Normal setup Easy to find quality options Cons- Expensive Must be thrown away or donated once I leave Overview- It’s a solid, easy, normal choice. But, it feels like an expensive waste of money since I have to get rid of it after 5 months. Air Mattress: Pros- Cheaper Can be taken back home and used afte ..read more

Advice to Newbie

Hello! I'm new to designing my space and would love some advice. I'm getting married and would love to make our living space more personal. We're moving into a basement suite. Not the best appearance-wise, but for our first place, we're grateful. I have never been a big decor person, so I'd love to get some advice on how to get started. How do I find my style without breaking our bank or become too impractical? I don't just wanna go on social media and spend a ton to copy what someone else has. submitted by /u/Stand_Which [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hello! My name is Juliana Kaplan and I'm a reporter at BI, where I cover how the economy impacts workers and vice versa. I've reported a lot on the economic and social conundrums facing millennials, including parents, and now I'm hoping to write about how millennials are navigating a tricky housing situation. If you're living alone, I'd love to talk to you about how you accomplished that, what it's been like, and what you wish people understood about what millennials are dealing with. You can feel free to contact me here, or shoot me an email at [jkaplan@businessinsider.com](mailto:jkaplan@bu ..read more

Help and advice on how to cover old 1950s tile (particularly the edge)

My apartment was built in the last 1950s and although they are updating units as people move out, I have no intention on moving and so, much deal with these old 1950s tiles. Since my unit will be completely renovated when I do move, I'm not too worried about returning it to it's move-in condition. The specific design issue I need to address is the tile border, which is rounded. Because of this round edge it's difficult to use self-adhesive tiles because the tiles are too thick and I can't manipulate around the rounded edge and worse, the corners. I have thought about laying the self-adhesive ..read more

Creative suggestions to close off loft space for privacy while allowing natural light in?

Hi Apartment Design friends, My 2 friends have an apartment that has this private (and rather large) room in NYC that I am interested in moving into for a few months. It has a private door and lots of indoor space but the only catch is the only natural light source is an open banister that opens up to the middle of the apartment. I worry that if I need to take work calls (or otherwise just want privacy), this will be an issue. I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for a solution for creating some privacy / sound dampening for this area, while still allowing for natural light to come in ..read more

Cat proof room divider

I'm trying to come up with the best option to put up a room divider in my open kitchen/dining/living room setup to section off the living room and use it as a bedroom. the most popular thing I've seen people do is put up a tension rod and just hang a big curtain. my concern with that is I have tension rods for curtains up in my windows. it's only happened once or twice, but my cats start playing with the curtains and then they pull down the curtains and the whole rod with it. because it's a smaller and thinner (~5ft) rod, they got out of the way and it isn't as big of a concern. But if I have ..read more
