The highly anticipated final round of Rug Racers XRS return season took place on Sunday 24th March where the podium places of each class were settled with the champions being crowned for the season. Unfortunately, the two driver who could’ve contested the modified title were not able to attend; Alex Thurston and Harley Eldridge – where Harley was out at ETS in Austria making history as the first female driver to make a modified ETS A final! The absence of these drivers meant that it would ultimately be won narrowly by Elliott Harper who would finish the season only 1 point ahead of runner-up ..read more

Rugracers XRS Round 4 saw an action packed day of racing across our 3 classes where the close and tough competition was made absolutely clear on a fast but technical track layout through the close times from top to bottom of each field! Frontie was very close throughout the day where 5th to 8th would be separated by only 7tenths! After four rounds of FTQ qualifying, we would see front-wheel drive national champion Ben Moorey take the TQ spot, closely followed by Adam Southgate and current championship leader, Jamie Hickin. The first leg final saw Ben cruise to a win from pole, followed by Adam ..read more

It's great to have the hobby fair back, and Tamiya has not disappointed us with a very interesting array of new cars..  42384 TRF421 Chassis Kit.  For me the obvious big hitter is the new Tamiya TRF race chassis. Nothing carried across from the old car, a totally new update to ensure TRF racers can compete anywhere :)  I have covered this in more detail here with detailed photos and close-ups in this separate article..  But let's take a look at some of the other more interesting releases.  58729 Opel Kadett GT/E (MB-01 chassis). The MB01 is a versatile little ..read more

Back from the grave.. Can I save this Tamiya TB Evo IV?

This year I decided that no new 'Projects' would be appearing until I finished some of the ongoing projects I’ve been working on over the last few years (FF04, TRF415 LP etc)..  However, my new years resolution didn't last long.. ? After giving in to the temptation a bottle of wine hanging around in the fridge after the festive period, I embarked on an evening that would see me failing Dry January in spectacular fashion. With the first bottle 'breaking the seal', I found myself travelling to meet up with friends in a taxi. Instead of questioning my lack of willpower, I spent the ..read more

2023 - A brief round up and new TRF kits for 2024?

2023 has been a bit of a hectic year away from the hobby so unfortunately I didn't make as many updates as I planned to the site or some of the ongoing projects. Having the the site go down and losing some posts (Blockhead Wild one review etc) was gutting. I did concentrate on what little free time I did have on racing, and that side of things has been fun, albeit I did pay the price for lack of preparation on some events.. However the Tamiya TRF420X has been getting faster and faster. The new SLP towers proved to work well, and the feedback from a dear departed friend was invaluable before ..read more

Tamiya TRF420 X SLP Carpet Set-up

The SLP TRF towers have been well received from the Tamiya racers based around the globe who have been running them. With that in mind here is a base set-up that the TRF UK drivers have been running in conjunction with the SLP towers on our Tamiya TRF420X's  All cars have the Tamiya 22080 lo-mount retainers fitted. Some of us use use the ARS (set to 1.5 gain 2 deg to 3.5). Others don't have it mounted so just run zero gain (like the default set-up).  There is also anti-squat on the rear.. This is good in high traction, although if traction is lower you can take this off for more ..read more

Tamiya 22080 Lo-Mount Aluminum Retainers Review
The RC Racer

Tamiya has given us racers a few new parts to keep us busy until the new chassis will arrive. One of the more interesting parts are the 22080 Lo-Mount aluminum retainers. The official blurb says that it will lower spring  position for smoother spring motion and nimble handling.  In the bag you get 4 retainers along with 4 shims.  The shims raise the retainers 0.5mm.. I can only imagine that you will use these if the retainer hits the arms. I didn't fit the shims and had no problem with the shocks rubbing against the arms.  The retainers weigh in at 0.83g, a tiny 0.24 ..read more
