Why Do ‘Good’ People Need to Believe in God for Salvation? (Tough Questions Teenagers Ask)
Rooted Ministry
by

As we present the need for salvation in Jesus to teenagers in our youth ministries, students will often testify that they know many atheists, Muslims, Buddhists, and Hindus, who are some of the nicest and most morally ethical people they know. The question then arises, if these friends do not believe in Jesus but are still morally good people, why is belief in Jesus necessary to go to heaven? If people are already loving, good, and righteous, then why do they need Jesus? What do they need to be saved from? These questions make a few assumptions and misinterpretations about the nature of goodne ..read more

It’s Okay to Not Be Okay: The Importance of Gospel Centrality in Asian American Youth Ministries

During my junior year in high school, a mentor in my youth group passed away after a long battle with cancer. He was only in his late 20’s. He was my hyung, a Korean word for “older brother” that communicates deep affection, respect, and honor. Despite his battle with cancer, he loved widely, cared deeply, served faithfully, and enjoyed life with intentionality and grace.  It was the first time I had faced grief of that magnitude. I experienced a range of emotions: anger, helplessness, and confusion to name a few.  Growing up in an Asian American immigrant home did not prepare me wel ..read more

Vulnerability in Parenting: Gospel Encouragement to Know and Be Known

One whole year. That is the length of time it took me to tell someone in my life that I was struggling with an eating disorder as a teenager. Although I was surrounded by people, I isolated myself in my pain. I felt paralyzed when it came to asking for help, fearful of the possibility of disappointing others, and ashamed for struggling with something I could not fix on my own.  Now as a parent of adolescents, I worry about my children similarly holding in something as significant as I did. I wonder what they might wrestle with that goes unspoken. These thoughts can take me down some scary ..read more

Teaching Teenagers to Teach Themselves from the Bible
Rooted Ministry

The most common question I hear from students in my youth group may surprise you. Certainly, teenagers ask traditional apologetic questions as they face down challenges from peers and teachers in their intellectual journeys. I also hear them ask about cultural apologetics as they are thrown into our ideologically complex culture. But the most common question I get from students is far simpler: How do I read the Bible? How can I understand all that it is saying? Young people are encountering a world that offers a million options for how they might live with unrestricted freedom. But that same w ..read more

Prioritizing Our Marriages During the Child-Raising Years

“I barely know my husband anymore. I’m afraid of having an empty nest.”  My friend’s words had a sharp edge to them as we walked laps around the park. But even through her obvious angst, I could sense her sadness.  She was a year away from all the kids being out of the house. While some look forward to this stage of life, my friend was dreading it. She and her husband had grown apart after years of focusing solely on their children. Their marriage was sustained by the distractions of football and soccer games, teen gatherings in their home, and shuffling kids to and fro. Now, the loo ..read more
