My first Cheltenham winner

Originally posted on theirishfield.ie Paul Webber shares with Leo Powell his memories of a special day, his first Cheltenham Festival winner THIRTEEN has never been considered unlucky in the Webber family. I was born on 13th August, my father’s 33rd birthday, not that he was conscious of my arrival until the following day, as he had his two naughty brothers staying to help or hinder him finish the harvest. They celebrated ‘harvest home’ in proper fashion, which was far more important than the arrival of a third child. Saddling our horses with a 13 number-cloth has never brought on superstitiou ..read more

That 2017–18 National Hunt season is already consigned to the bin and the new one is well into its unrelenting stride. It still seems wrong that there is no ‘proper’ break for Man nor Beast and that the seasons are interwoven together to produce seamless and unending campaigns. Having a break of a week is no solution. Sensibly jockeys disappear near and far, but horses running during the first two weeks of the new season still need galloping and schooling, but their race-day partners are absent from our training grounds. Surely three weeks in July to coincide with children’s holidays and the f ..read more

During this long, difficult, snowy and dreary Winter, Cropredy Lawn has dealt with three snow storms but until four weeks ago had somehow avoided the worst of the rain. My how have we made up for that in the last two weeks, as in recent days this farm has never looked so wet since Dad died and I took over in 1995. As pre-preparatory school children we had to endure extra ‘religious reading’, under the fierce instruction of the diminutive Miss Walsh in the dining room after tea, all through the Winter. Mum and Dad realised we’d vanish at that time of day during the Summer! Of course the most im ..read more

January may have been ‘dry’ in more ways than one for many of you, but around Cropredy Lawn and the racecourses we had hoped to visit during that month, ‘dry’ never appeared in the descriptions of the ground. The only advantage of wet weather is that we get to seriously abuse the luxury we have in our Water-Walk! Within a few minutes of completing their cantering or galloping exercise, the horses are immersed in two feet of cold water for just as long as we want them to be. Horses need to walk and wind down after exercise for at least twenty minutes, so they might as well do it in therapeutic ..read more

Winter arrived with a vengeance of about 9” of snow around ‘these here parts’. It all looks so pristine and beautiful to start with, but when you have horses to exercise safely and half a mile of the drive to keep ice-free so that our team can even reach us, it makes for a hell of a lot of extra work. Wheel-barrows are not good 4 x 4s and hate snow, so the yards have to be cleared with salted pathways created to all important areas. Every task just takes that much longer. Plenty of our team live a few miles away and are at the mercy of the whim of our local councils and their wish to either t ..read more

After seven seconds from nine races, who could have predicted that COPPERFACEJACK would put himself into contention for ‘First News’ in two consecutive PWR Reports by winning his second consecutive race at Taunton! However, he has been narrowly gazumped at the very final hour by COSMIC DIAMOND’s easy win at Towcester yesterday. “LUCY” travelled so well through the race that barring disaster looked the winner from a fair way from home! There was a great turn-out from her owners, Economic Security Partnership who were corralled by Peter Bell in the absence of Ian Magee who is giving much-needed ..read more

Photo credit: yan-photography.co.uk A Triumph for National Hunt Perseverance! So many times has COPPERFACEJACK looked like winning a race, only for some dastardly opponent to swoop by him on the run-in. He had finished second seven times out of his previous nine races, a record that reflected more embarrassment upon the trainer than the horse. Despite this dodgy record, I have felt unable to blame horse or jockey at any stage as every time both appeared to be giving it their best shot. However as all Cricket captains know, when your bowlers are plodding away but just not able to find that ..read more

Three runners set off for Huntingdon on Thursday and two became thrilling winners. I agree with Meatloaf when he sang “That two out of three ain’t bad.” We hoped more than knew that BREATH OF BLIGHTY and COSMIC DANCER were fit enough for their seasonal debuts after five months off. They have just done plenty of work at home, without going away to work on the grass or at Wolverhampton. BREATH OF BLIGHTY is a rounded, stocky fellow and it was always possible that he would benefit from this run which he did. However we are very pleased with the way he stayed on form the last in finishing fourth ..read more

The day dawns after weeks of preparation, planning and praying. It is a seriously important day for everybody and so much work goes into getting everything precisely right. For 19 out of the last 20 years the ‘Weather Gods’ have smiled on us, but as we are increasingly and presently witnessing, these Gods can be both deaf, spiteful and horrifically destructive. At least we only had to cope with a squalls rather than Hurricane Irma, an appalling behaved horse and the coldest Owners Day In memory, which sadly sent our owners home too soon. The fear of there being no such thing as a ‘free lunch ..read more
