Last Friday, on March 22nd, students and teachers at Mildred Ave K-8 School visited Northeastern University for the first time. About 50 eighth grade students split up into three classrooms to learn all about Catapults, Reverse Egg Drops and Earthquakes. In the Catapults section, students learned about projectile motion and accuracy and precision. They then were provided popsicle sticks, a rubber band and a lot of duct tape to construct their own catapult. Each team had a chance to test their catapult by launching skittles at a target and scoring points based on how accurate their catapults we ..read more

Last Friday (10.6) marked our second field trip of the 2023-2024 academic year! 50 students from Dever Elementary School in Boston came to Northeastern to participate in STEM activities. The day started with a presentation on the Engineering Design Process and the fundamentals of bioengineering. The first activity the students completed was a reverse egg drop. They tried to build a device to catch an egg — without breaking — dropped from a height! The egg worked as a great example of a brain and a skull to emphasize the importance of wearing helmets and for the ongoing research in the brain in ..read more

On Friday, October 20th, Center for STEM Education staff participated in UP Academy Dorchester’s inaugural Spark: A Day of STEM Exploration! Over 600 middle schoolers from the Boston area came to UP Academy to join in hands-on activities to help them engage with and think about STEM concepts. We brought paper rockets as our activity! Due to the organisation of the day — the middle schoolers rotated in groups with their classroom teachers and stayed at each table for about 10 minutes — we had to slightly modify what we would typically do with that age group. The students worked in teams to desi ..read more

After the showcase,  30 high school junior and senior students from the O’Bryant School joined us in one of the EXP classrooms for the a short talk by Associate Dean Richard Harris, followed by the hexbug activity led by Professor Jennifer Love and volunteers. Working with just a single index card and some tape, the students constructed designs for their hexbugs that would keep them within the ‘battle arena’ — even if another teams hexbug tried to knock them out.
