With the announcement of the new NRHA drug rule revisions, we have been hard at work with people hitting the telephones to find out how board members voted in “SediGate”. The provision to inject horses with a sedative 30 minutes prior to an event during warm-up times. In the open letter to all members, NRHA President Rick Clark, advised it required a supermajority of 67% vote to pass the new drug rules and penalties; therefore requiring 12 votes minimum. The president can only vote in a tie-breaker, so he is excluded. People can only vote once. Clark goes on to write “Like the industry, the bo ..read more

With the recent ruling allowing the use of an off-label sedative 30 minutes, prior to competition by the NRHA (National Reining Horse Association) members are calling into question the conduct of the Board of Directors. For years, the NRHA has promoted and charged competitors for drug testing but there is little to no evidence of test results, fines or consistency of testing. Many members state they have been showing for years and have never been tested. Others state they have seen testers for a few hours on the first day of a 4-5 day show only. Typically testing horses in the lower ranked cla ..read more

A decade on and no real changes in drug regulation: the western industries are worse now. Reprinted from Barrel Horse News in November, 2012. Some horses are bred to run long distances fast; some bloodlines are famous for the inherent burst of quick speed they pass on. Some horses are bred for their ability to bury their haunches in the ground and turn. Some are bred for their fluid movements. In an industry that has grown more specialized than ever before, one thing remains true of all horses — performance horses included, and that is all members of the equine species are in some way shape or ..read more

NRHA says Respect the Horse: What About This Distressed Reining Horse
Reining Trainers
by Animal Welfare
2y ago
The horse walks into the show pen visibly distressed, and suffering and not a sole at this NRHA event did anything to help him, even though they spread marketing everywhere about Respect the Horse. Expected to show as a top athlete in a physically demanding performance, his distress is obvious at the event and recorded on video. Not the gate marshal, the show manager, the stewards, the judges, the scribes, the owner, the trainer/rider, other competitors, or a single person in the crowd. They just watched as he suffered and then screamed in elation at him, being made to spin fast whilst pissing ..read more
