DDSW Archives HAPPY NEW YEAR! WELCOME, 2021. Thank you to those of you who prodded me and asked if I was going to put up an end-of-year post this year. It’s a bit late, but here it is. 2020 GOALS REVIEW Back in January of 2020, I only named two goals for the year: ONE. Max out all tax-advantaged and employee benefit spaces available 401k, Roth IRA, HSA, and ESPP (employee stock purchase plan). VERDICT: PARTIAL PASS. I managed to max out my 401k, Roth IRA, and HSA. I did not take advantage of the ESPP because by the time the purchase window opened, COVID hit and I had other priorities. In my last post, I was trying my best to endure my living situation. It was not to be, however. Two weeks after my last post, I moved out. Yeah, it all happened pretty quickly. I was prepared to try to ride out the winter there even though I was miserable. Two events triggered my decision to leave; one linked to each roommate. That was it. I was done. I packed up my stuff and got the hell out. Thanks to all of you who commented on my last post. Ms. Afro Penny and Maria asked me to think about whether enduring my living situation was worth it, and to prioritize my mental health. I did reflect ..read more

I am this frog right now. The Indoctrinated Roommate The working-from-home roommate and I are continuing to get on each other’s nerves. On top of everything else, he’s now told me he thinks COVID is a hoax and is not taking it seriously. He spends time getting indoctrinated by weird conspiracy theory and pseudo-scientific videos online. Because he blasts his computer at high volume in the house, I can hear the nonsense he listens to. Since my last post, he had an out-of-state relative fly in to visit for a couple of days in the house without even telling the other roommate and me, let alone ..read more

Image credit: The Atlantic Roommate #1’s room has remained empty since she left. Last month, Landlord told me that one guy was interested in renting it, but I said no. I didn’t want to share a bathroom with a guy. I’ve done that before (see my old posts about my roommate when I first moved to this area) and I’m not interested in doing that again. However, as the weeks have gone by, Landlord has been getting increasingly desperate to rent out the room. I was getting concerned that he would rent it out to anyone just to get the money. One afternoon, Landlord, without letting me know ahead of t ..read more

How are you holding up these days? I’m somehow managing, but it is a daily struggle. Warning! This will be a rant and whine post. The Virus Blast this virus to the fiery depths of hell!  I’m still virus-free, thankfully, but everything about this pandemic is relentless. I’ve greatly limited my news intake, so that’s helping. Roommate #1, the one who fled to her parents’ house upon the start of lockdown, has completely moved out as of last month. Now that there is an empty room in the house, the rest of us roommates are paying higher rent and utilities to cover the cost. My monthly paymen ..read more

For some of us, 2020 was supposed to be the year of resets, freedom, and new beginnings. It didn’t turn out that way, unfortunately. Sigh. With no end in sight to the coronavirus pandemic, we cling to hopes of a vaccine and medical treatments.  It’s all scary, tiring, and depressing. This, combined with a draining job, has resulted in my not posting much this year. The Job The job is still draining and stressful and I’d rather be doing any number of things instead, but given the current environment, I’m grateful to have any money coming in. Three more people in my division have been let ..read more

Howdy, folks! Welcome, 2020! It’s been almost a month since my last post. I’ve been busy with work and the stuff of life. So what have I been up to since the day I told debt to go pound sand? I’ve been spending my take-home pay without a budget for a couple of months to feel normal again. This is temporary. I will go back on a spending plan again soon. During this month, January, I’ve focused on buying new clothes and shoes for work, and decluttering. I donated old clothes and things that I wasn’t using to Goodwill. February will be the start of my focus on make-up and hair. This phase will r ..read more
