First Bite Is Incredible
The Indie Game Website

Visual novels are great. It’s not a particularly shocking statement, but it apparently needs repeating every now and then to make sure everyone’s 100% sure of it. So, as we’re all good now, it’s time to talk about First Bite. First Bite is a dark comedy that has you playing as a character called Noe, or you can rename them if you like, who’s a bit of a cryptid hunter. Having spent a lot of their life hunting for the paranormal, they accidentally end up walking into a house populated by three hot vampires. If, like Noe, that doesn’t sound all that bad to you, then you’ve probably already bought ..read more

Archvale Is An Amazing Mix Of Genres
The Indie Game Website

It’s been a truly stellar year for indie gaming, quite possibly one of the best we’ve ever had. There’s been highlight after highlight, and if you’ve been checking all of them out, you’ve likely not had time to do much else. Well, we’ve got another one for you to add to your list of must-plays called Archvale. It’s a fusion of RPG and bullet hell, which isn’t something we’d ever expect to work, but it does with aplomb. Set in a world where an evil king once ruled, you play as the only hero capable of possibly stopping him for good. To do so, you have to journey across the land, find the pieces ..read more

Aspire: Ina’s Tale Review
The Indie Game Website
by Alexis Ong

The proliferation of “story-rich” as a game descriptor should be welcome news to folks who love narrative-driven games, but these days it has as much meaning as an advertisement for a gluten-free egg. Initial impressions of Aspire: Ina’s Tale were that it’s pretty, offers moments of engaging puzzle-solving, and has the earnest makings of a story, but even after several hours into the game, it’s all too generic to make much of an impact. It reminds me a little of my experience with Hoa – a similar sort of 2D platformer that was lauded for its gorgeous hand-painted scenery – nice to look at, but ..read more

Just Play Outer Wilds, Okay?
The Indie Game Website
by Jason Coles

Outer Wilds came out in 2019, and has been one of those games that’s just never not been talked about since, at least when it comes to podcasts and whatnot. It’s probably underrated, but only because it’s the kind of game where you’re going to have to think and die a lot, and some people aren’t into that. It is, undoubtedly, excellent, and it’s the kind of game that fits well into any time off work that some of you lucky folks might be having right now. Outer Wilds is a game about time, space, and mystery. It’s about failing, learning, and growing. It’s about the rewards that await those with ..read more

Dragon Fist: VR Kung Fu Is A Blast
The Indie Game Website

Virtual Reality is still very much luxury, and we know that. However, thanks to the combo of both the Oculus Quest 2, and apps like Airlink and Virtual Desktop that allow you to connect to your PC using the headset wirelessly, it’s slowly becoming more affordable, and easier to manage. One of the coolest games to have come out recently is Dragon Fist: VR Kung Fu. Dragon Fist is a first-person fighting game where you get to pick a character, and then lead them through battle after increasingly difficult battle. Your attacks come in the form of punches, palm strikes, and finger jabs. Each of the ..read more

Blaston Is An Essential Oculus Quest 2 Game
The Indie Game Website

I recently splashed out and treated myself to an Oculus Rift 2, because it’s been an extraordinarily rubbish year, I’m tired, and I miss how visceral VR can feel. Plus, frankly, it’s a purer form of escapism, because I literally can’t perceive the world around me. Anyway, the long and short of that is that I now have a fancy new gadget to mess about with, but I also needed to buy some games to play on it. The Air Link functionality is really impressive, but it’s nice to not have to look at my desktop, even digitally. Anyway, on a whim, which isn’t something that happens often at this point, I ..read more

A Letter From The Editor
The Indie Game Website

If you’re wondering why there’s a capybara here, then don’t wonder, just enjoy it. As you’ll know from the post Lewis made, The Indie Game Website is, at least for now, taking a break. I’ve never written a post like this before, and while I could easily wax on about how important the site has been for me, I want to focus on the positive effect I think it has on the general industry. Sure, we’ve undoubtedly become an important place for indie coverage, which is no big surprise when we’re on Metacritic and one of the places that is exclusively dedicated to indie gaming, but I think The Indie Gam ..read more

When we launched The Indie Game Website back in 2017 (good heavens!), we did so for one key reason. As indie game fanatics, we were frustrated by what we perceived as an increasing dearth of opportunities for indie developers of all walks of life to gain visibility within the media landscape. Having worked in and around the indie game space for years, we knew how tough it was for indies to cut through the noise – especially smaller studios and solo developers, and doubly so for developers outside of the core, English-speaking game development scene. We already ran an indie game marketing agenc ..read more

Scarf Review
The Indie Game Website
by Nat Smith

Scarf wears its influence on its sleeve – or rather, around its neck. Like so many adventure titles before it, the game’s design ethos takes clear direction from 2012’s critically acclaimed Journey. In Scarf, as in Journey, the player takes the role of a nomad exploring an ancient world. Unlike in Journey, they aren’t alone. Instead, they are joined by a polymorphic, dragon-shaped scarf that’s been forcibly separated from its mother. The game’s premise is simple, yet heartfelt: the nomad and scarf must journey together to retrieve fragments of a portal that, once activated, will finally reunit ..read more
