Yesterday, Three of us observed a summer plumage Jack Snipe in June on Scilly!! How bizarre is that??   At 08.00 this morning, Jo and I twitched a singing Golden Oriole in Mick Scott garden at Longstones that he heard shortly before. We did hear it call twice close by but could we see the bloody thing? In the afternoon we had no luck in searching for yesterdays Hoopoe in the Rocky Hill area but later on at 19.15, we did hear, with Robin, the Golden Oriole singing at the north entrance of Holy Vale that Graham Cundale found yesterday. As Longstones is only a field away from where we were, could ..read more

This 1st summer Common Rosefinch only stayed for two days and was last seen on the 4th singing at Porth Hellick next to the seaward hide    Earlier today at 14.20, a few of us heard the Melodious Warbler, for it's fifth day, at the southern entrance of Lower Moors but could we see it? I had an hour to kill before my last flight of the day that I was meeting at 17.30. Jo and I poked around Porth Hellick and had one more look in the Sussex Hide before returning to me wagon. It was deja vu for us both as a thrush sized warbler flew low across the water at close range from right to left before cra ..read more

This Melodious Warbler was singing at Standing Stones Field at Lower Moors   It wasn't until nearly 13.00 that the first message of the day came on the Scilly Bird News Group with a singing Melodious Warbler at Trench Lane found by Scott Ried. However, it wasn't until 14.30 that Jo and I made it down there to see the warbler and after a few minutesn of being there, I could hear it nearby in the Standing Stones Field. Here it showed well before disappearing deeper into the hedge that borders the field. We had to get to the airport but returned again over an hour later as Richie Aston heard a Go ..read more

These 2 Spoonbill were performing well in front of the Sussex hide at Porth Hellick this morning.    Shortly after 10.00 this morning, I was coming out of the COOP with the shopping for work, when news came out on the Scilly Bird News WhatsApp group that Higgo had 2 Spoonbill at Porth Hellick Pool. No longer a rare bird like it used to be over ten years ago but it's very unusual to have them on the pool. Normally they are seen on Green Island in the distance when they arrive in the autunm. I threw the shopping in me wagon and a few minutes later I was with Higgo enjoying some cracking views of ..read more

Today I found a Great Reed Warbler at Porth Hellick in the fog and a year ago yesterday, I found another individual at the same site also in the fog! This record shot was the best I could do of the mobile warbler as it flew away over the reeds.   Woke up to thick soup this morning and as there were no flights all day, I took the afternoon off. At 15.00, Ray, Jo and I had been in the seaward hide for ten minutes when a large warbler very briefly flew low over the water from left to right and I immediatly identified it as a Great Reed Warbler. As Jo had my bins at the time, as it crashed into th ..read more

Glossy Ibis showing off in front the Sussex Hide at Porth Hellick   At 10.00 this morning, I had just left Porth Hellick and all I had seen of note were a Cuckoo and the Cetti's Warbler and a pair of mating Eyed Hawkmoth,. Some fifteen minuites later, Dave Dimmock had the Glossy Ibis (that's been on Tresco Simpsons Field since it was first found by Pam Montrose two dasys ago) at Porth Hellick. I had already seen this bird briefly in flight east low over airport lane later on in the afternoon on the day it was first found. Dispite a few of us searching for it that evening there was no sign and ..read more

RED-FOOTED FALCON at Porth Hellick Down

This 1st summer male RED-FOOTED FALCON spent all day at the top of Porth Hellick Down showing down to five metres at times!   An awsome day non-stop! Yesterday I heard, only twice in 45 minutes, what I thought might of been a Greenish Warbler at Carreg Dhu Gardens while we were eating our lunch. I alerted others and both Ralf Parks and Scott Reid heard it once on different occasions in the same area of the garden in two hours. So this morning the plan was to pick Higgo up at 07.00 and spend some time in the gardens. By myself, I spent an hour there in drizzle and all I got was a single Spotted ..read more

As I've never seen a Water Pipit before in summer plumage, it was like looking at a new species to me.  Late this morning, I was just taking some folks up to the airport when Peter Butler found a Water Pipit at Porth Hellick. I picked up Higgo on the way to the airport and shortly afterwards we were both enjoying good views of the pipit in front and on one occasion, almost under the Sussex hide, as it fed along the shoreline with our first Common Sandpiper of the year. It then flew off towards the beach but returned a few minutes later and continued showing well. There have been a few reco ..read more

Higgo found this Lesser Yellowlegs at Bryher Great Pool yesterday    This morning at Porth Hellick I had both the Garden and Cetti's Warbler. Returning to me wagon I heard a Golden Oriole singing in the Kittiidown pines but could I see the thing. On the airfield there were 2 Golden Plover and 4 Wheatear. There were 2 Golden Plover on the airfield   Higgo decided to have a week off work and made his usual visits to Bryher. It payed off yesterday when he went and discovered a Lesser Yellowlegs on the Bryher Great Pool. It was this morning when most of us made it over on the 10.15 boat and all h ..read more

Steve Bradshaw found this Stone Curlew at Kittidown after finding the sixth Subalpine Warbler sp so far this spring on St Agnes two days ago.   This afternoon I had a single Spotted Flycatcher and Whitethroat at the Telegraph/Porthloo junction and at Carreg Dhu Gardens another Spotted Flycatcher but no sign of the 2 Pied Flycatcher and Garden Warbler we had yesterday. Later on after 15.00, Steve Bradshaw found a Stone Curlew in the small first field at the Mount Todden junction 50 yards towards Kittidown. I just got there in time to see it at the far side of the field then for it to fly off to ..read more
