The Simple Living

genneve is helping women feel awesome in midlife and menopause I’d like to welcome Jill Angelo to share her community with all the women here wanting to know more about their health in midlife or menopause. Taking care of your health can be really challenging, especially if it’s managing menopause hot flashes, dry skin or interrupted sleep. It helps to have a place where you can turn for support and answers, but for this “third chapter” of a woman’s reproductive life, there haven’t been many such places. Until now. Jill started genneve when she was in her 40s, taking a huge leap of faith after ..read more

Why you should swap coffee for tea
The Simple Living
by Janet Luhrs

Relieving anxiety and boosting your health with matcha green tea What’s wrong with coffee? There’s the bloating problem, the weight around the middle problem, and the anxiety and insomnia problem  – all tied to drinking coffee. But I’ve had a really hard time finding a decent alternative. Regular tea just doesn’t do it for me. It doesn’t have the rich, full flavor that coffee has. Tea always seems wimpy and thin tasting compared to coffee. Coffee tastes a little like chocolate and tea tastes like flavored water. Plus, there is nothing like a fabulous coffee latte, is there? There’s a ..read more

Conversation with a recovering hoarder
The Simple Living
by Janet Luhrs

Lee Shuer calls himself a “finder keeper.” He doesn’t like the word “hoarder,” because to him, it’s insulting, and does not really explain the specifics of what is going on, since each person is different. For Lee, “finder keeper” describes his behavior, and other terms people can use are “excessive collecting,” or “problematic clutter.” For this post, I’ll refer to the word “hoarder,” because it’s what most people are familiar with. You can decide what works for you. Lee contacted me after my last post on hoarding was published. He wanted to educate me, and what he shared with me is so good ..read more

Living a life less ordinary
The Simple Living

How much of your busyness is an effort to not miss out and to look like you have an interesting life? Meet Ali Cornish, who realized she was not at all happy being overly busy, and find out how she found true fulfillment: In my early 20s, I breezed through life in a state of constant movement and engagement. I lived in five separate cities, two different countries, and held a grand total of 11 jobs in the span of 4 years. With a serious case of the dreaded FOMO (fear of missing out), I felt the grass was greener elsewhere. Just like everyone I knew, I was always out-and-about, rarely spending ..read more

Take it seriously – hoarding is a psychological disorder
The Simple Living
by Janet Luhrs

Wow. When I wrote my first post about hoarding, I had no idea it would generate such passion and interest. I started to write individual responses to all of you who have posted your comments, but there were so many common themes in the comments that I realized it was time for me to write a new post that includes updated information about hoarding. All of you who posted have really educated me. In my original post, I suggested strategies like, “give your hoarder his or her own room,” or “set rules about common spaces,” and so on. From all of you, I realized that strategies like these don’t work ..read more

What your clutter says about you
The Simple Living
by Janet Luhrs

Have you ever noticed that your clutter is tied to how you feel inside? I notice that when I’m not feeling settled, or I’m anxious about something or in some way feeling scattered, I tend to let stuff pile up more than when I’m feeling calm. Clutter is such a graphic manifestation of our inner world, isn’t it? To bring this home, I just received an email from a reader who said she was going through a huge life transition with her youngest child off to college, she was in a luke-warm marriage, and she’d been a homemaker and wanted to find her passion, but didn’t know where to start. Her whole e ..read more

How to be safe using Uber and Lyft
The Simple Living

I don’t normally write public service announcements, but in this case, I’m writing one. I feel like all of you who subscribe to my blog are my family, and I care. I want you to be safe. Please pass this on to everyone you know. Last week, the news was abuzz with a big story about a female Uber passenger who was sexually assaulted by a “fake” Uber driver. Apparently hers was not the only such incident involving fake Uber and Lyft drivers. I urge you to watch the video here. I’m a huge, huge proponent of using rideshare companies to get around in large cities, so this news got my attention ..read more

Permanently calm your anxiety with this morning routine
The Simple Living

Did you know that forty percent of us are wired more anxiously than others? If you’re one of the group, don’t worry! You’re not doomed to always be anxious. You can change your neural pathways to be more calm. Current science is all about the plasticity of neural pathways – which means that our brains can indeed, be re-wired. Think of your brain’s neural pathways as a trail through the woods. Say it’s a trail that’s been used a lot, and that’s the trail you usually take. But what if you want to take a different trail – one that doesn’t yet exist or is very faint? You have to bushwhac ..read more

Why you don’t need this kind of credit card stress
The Simple Living
by Janet Luhrs
3y ago
Let’s talk about credit cards and stress. I only carry one credit card for a bunch of reasons, and one of them is that I don’t want the stress of having more than one card. (If you need to carry a separate card for business, that’s different. I’m talking about personal cards.) But recently, I was in a store and I’m embarrassed to say that I let the clerk talk me into saving a bunch of money on my purchase by opening a store credit card. I knew I was doing something stupid as soon as I agreed to this, but I thought, well, the card will let me save 10 percent on all of my purchases, and I shop h ..read more
