Do Hormones Effect Varicose Veins?
The Leg Vein Doctor | Brisbane Varicose Vein & Spider Vein Clinic

Many women seek treatment for their varicose veins during pregnancy and menopause.  During these periods hormone levels of estrogen and progesterone can change dramatically. Studies have found the saphenous leg veins to be sensitive to hormonal fluctuation. Progesterone causing dilation which in turn effects the vein’s walls and valves elasticity, reducing the ability to function competently.   When pregnant the increased blood needed to support a baby puts pressure on the venous system. Fortunately, some new mums find post-partum that their varicose veins do resolve, &nbs ..read more

A common misconception around veins is that only women are affected. However, the truth is venous disease does not discriminate. According to current research approximately 40 percent of men in Australia suffer with varicose veins at some point in their lives. Often presenting for treatment much later and with their veins more severe than women. Puts men at greater risk of ulceration and the permanent skin damage that follows advanced varicose veins. Frequently men are not so concerned about the visual appearance of their legs therefore are less likely to be proactive about seeking early trea ..read more

Are My Varicose Veins Causing Leg Cramps?
The Leg Vein Doctor | Brisbane Varicose Vein & Spider Vein Clinic
by Nicholas Kemp

Leg cramps are a common symptom of varicose veins. These sudden involuntary muscle contractions can occur for a few seconds or even last a couple of minutes and can be quite painful. Some patients suffer with them during their working day or others in the nighttime when in bed. One reason for cramps occurring for people with varicose veins is because the valves inside the veins are incompetent, which allows blood to pool in the leg rather than circulating as it should. The excess blood causes the vein to become enlarged, putting pressure on the nerves and muscles in your legs. This resulting s ..read more

I'm frequently asked if taking aspirin will help prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) in situations such as long haul international flights where there is a known increased risk of DVT.  Before answering this question it is helpful to understand some basic information about blood clots. Blood clots arise due to thrombosis anywhere in the arterial or venous circulation. DVTs occur in the venous circulation.  Heart attacks and strokes occur due to blood clots in the arterial circulation.  Venous and arterial blood clots are very different.   The process of blood clotting is tho ..read more

  Winter in Queensland...

As the thermometer drops so does the number of complaints about varicose veins. Admittedly “Brinter” (Brisbane’s winter) is pretty short however we should still get excited by the fact that the cold weather causes veins to shrink. The dilation makes it easier for the valves function properly resulting in less swollen ankles and cramps.   Sadly, it is not all good news…winter brings other challenges.   Reduced movement: most of us aren’t fierce enough to keep swimming through the winter months but just make sure you don’t stop, choose something else like a walk up Mt. Coot-tha. Keep ..read more

Spider veins are red, varicose veins are blue. If you have either, here is what you can do.    Spider veins are small, red or purple thread veins under the skin’s surface.    Threated using very fine needles to target the individual veins and flush them through with a chemical sclerosant. Magnification is used in order to be meticulous. Spider Vein are considered to be cosmetic, and retreatment is usually required every few years.    Varicose veins are larger bluish veins often they can become “ropey” and protrude from the skin.    Varicose veins af ..read more

What is a clot?
The Leg Vein Doctor | Brisbane Varicose Vein & Spider Vein Clinic

There has been much discussion regarding clots in the media but what exactly are they?  A blood clot is a mass formed by platelets held together by fibrin, a protein that acts like glue.  Varicose veins mean the superficial venous system is not functioning as it should, in severe cases the deep system can also be incompetent. Clots can form as the blood is not flowing correctly and can pool in areas or travel the wrong way.  If muscles squeeze a clot out a vein in the leg, there is a chance it can travel elsewhere within the body and can lead to serious complications such as Dee ..read more
