Linger. Reflect. Love.

Each falling leaf is a call to hold tighter still to the ones we love. To value ordinary moments, simple pleasures, and daily laughter. It is an invitation to hold both beauty and grief in tension. To celebrate deep love and lives well lived as we also mourn what has been lost. It is a call to sit with the grief of loss and allow ourselves time and faithfulness to those feelings of barrenness. It is a promise that grief, lost futures, and even death do not hold the final word. Barren branches nurture space for budding life, new dreams, and someday, that next perfect moment ..read more

“A man began work at an insurance company and soon grew his clientele beyond any numbers the others within the company had ever seen. The company was so impressed with his success that they asked him to speak at their national gathering of workers as an example of inspiration and success. There was a large crowd when the man stood to speak and he was so nervous that all he could say was, ‘I see the people, I see the people, I see the people’ and then he fainted overcome with nerves. The gathered crowd paused, fell silent, and then stood and gave a standing ovation as the man was revived and pr ..read more

Blessings of an Asparagus Plate

I had not thought of that asparagus plate in several months until today. I was in North Carolina speaking to a church book club about . Amidst a few weeks of work stress, it was the perfect respite to be with book lovers, discussing the story. To remember that, at my core, I am a writer. We spent time talking about the sense of place in my novel—and how a sight or smell can take you right back to a precious place from your childhood. We talked about sanctuaries—the real structures and those that rest in your heart. About the beloved ghosts of your past who hover around and within you as you si ..read more

Humility as the Heartbeat

God’s grace is peace-filled and energy-giving. We are loved permanently and completely. Can we rise to meet this gift? , accepted by that which is greater than you, the name of which you do not know…perhaps you will know the name later. Simply accept the fact that you are accepted.’ This is grace. We may not be better than before, and we may not believe more than before. But everything is transformed ..read more

The Story of Us All

This is where my story with what I thought was a VERY full plate joined the story of a local middle school that none of my children had attended. My daughter’s Girl Scout troop wanted to do a project with the school across the street from BMUMC. I honestly cannot tell you how I went from chaperoning a gaggle of girls organizing a school supply drive to sitting in a luncheon with Bishop McAlilly’s wife agreeing to serve as a United4Hope coordinator between our church and HG Hill Middle School, but there I was eating chicken salad and signing away what little spare time I had ..read more

Don't Forget to Linger

This month, we are shifting our focus to how we can be all in. While the two themes might have a different rhythm to them, I do think they are interconnected. For us to be all in, we don’t have to negate the message of lingering. This means that we are not to forget about margin and pace and sabbath. This means we are not to forsake paying attention to our bodies and spirits and loved ones. Instead, all of those lessons and reminders are the foundation on which we build. I think lingering is necessary in discerning how we are called to be all in, and we saw that in the way Jesus retreated to t ..read more

What's Your Story?

If you were asked to share your story, what would you choose to share? Don’t try to tell me you don’t have a story to share; you do! Don’t let yourself believe that your story is boring, lacking something, or too normal to share. There are no qualifiers on what makes your story meaningful or worth sharing. As you begin to consider the stories you carry with you, might I suggest capturing them in the form of a psalm. I find it a helpful format to practice remembering, questioning, raging, lamenting, and praising ..read more

Grace and Forgiveness in Community

God loves us as his own creation, does not make mistakes, and does not change his mind. To become tangled in mistakes-- past, present, and future (God knows about those, too)-- is a form of hubris. We must receive the grace God has already given us and let go of self-judgment. To do this letting-go is hubris, not a shallow "I'm fabulous". It is a mature awareness that we already have God's love and forgiveness, and absolutely nothing can change that ..read more

Life is not so easily delineated into clean and neat areas of right and wrong, good and bad. Instead, we find ourselves wading through areas of gray, lost in a sea of mixed emotions and thoughts, searching for the good, the true, and the right ..read more
