Serious question - does anyone else have more trouble playing RPG games today than in the past?

RPG games in theory are my favourite genre and yet whenever I get to play one, even though it seems amazing on paper I feel like I am getting burnt out very quickly. I would start an RPG like say Baldur's gate 3 for example, and at first I would get into the story and listen to all the dialogue, read all the lore, but then gradually I start to just skip more and more and just get straight into combat, it is not that I feel bored necessarily but almost as if I am not being stimulated enough, it was never like this before for me, I used to be able read through whole books of dialogue in older R ..read more

Well-written, engaging RPGs with team dynamics and great magic systems?

Hi, everyone. I tried restarting Skyrim recently, with the "Lost Legacy" modlist. And though it was beautiful - and a lot of modders poured their hearts into the game - it just wasn't for me. I don't mean to offend anyone, as it was a groundbreaking game, but it just felt shallow and repetitive to me. I reflected that the RPGs I've loved most have great team dynamics (Mass Effect), great writing (Planescape Torment) and - as someone who alternates between thief and mage mains - great magic systems (Baldur's Gate 3). These really are the three pillars I'm looking for in my next RPG. I'm lookin ..read more

Any good “bright” and attention grabbing rpg games? I’ve always played building games like the sims and more modern and story based games like detroit become human, it takes two, so forth. I’m a pretty new rpg gamer but I’ve played genshin and liked it, hated how there wasn’t much freedom to do things you want to or building. Let alone interaction with real players. Chitchatcity was also a game I adored as a child before they took it down due to lack of popularity and funds, there was a ton of building and designing in it. I love storylines when Im not forced to play stories or long quests no ..read more

How important is combat mechanics in an RPG?

There probably exists a niche for what I am vaguely describing, but I haven't found out its' name yet. I mostly have played games like Skyrim, kenshi, fallout 3&4, the Witcher 1&2, assassin's Creed black flag, stuff like that. Basically, I am curious. If I mention generally the term "RPG", do people assume it's going to have tits, violence and alcohol? Lol Edit: I am really just asking because I'd like to know if there's a particular genre of an RPG that has something like city/base/kingdom building as well as progression but more like open world not as story driven. And not so much c ..read more

Fallout 1 and 2 is playable on Android. What other classic isometric RPGs can be played on the go?

I've always loved playing RPGs since I was a kid, but I've mostly played FPS style or third person ones outside Disco Elysium (Dragon Age Origins is isometric-ish but my Xbox 360 playthrough felt more third person action). The Fallout TV show is reminding me how much I loved the series all over again. I'm doing my research with 1 and 2 on my Android now via fo2.exe. That has me wondering - what other great isometric RPGs are available on Android? I noticed Baulder's Gate 1 and 2 are. I don't have nostalgia for a particular era. Old, new, whatever is great. But I am drawn constantly to RPGs th ..read more

RPGs with city building?

There are a lot of games with things like upgrading your town or hub. But I’ve yet to find any good rpgs with a legitimate city building system. Some survival rpgs have things like base building. But the actual rpg side of it is basically a shell or simply grindy and repetitive. I’m not sure if the combination of a good rpg and city building setup even exists. Any good recommendations for a weird niche like this? Happy to play most graphic styles if the game is good. (Any platform) submitted by /u/VonKnobby [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
