What a busy year it’s been! From Powerhouse Late, to the Festival of Creativity, to PAX, we’ve been up to a lot this year. On our way, we’ve had the privilege to deliver two talks on game design that we wanted to share with you. Hopefully they will give you useful ideas you can apply to your game. You can also find lots more game design content from us on this playlist on our youtube channel. Ever wonder what sparked the ideas behind your favourite RPGs? So did we! So, we asked 50 game designers two key questions to uncover the inspirations that lead to their games. We analyzed all the answers, and turned them into a talk for Big Bad Con Online 2023. In the talk, we unpacked the results, and identified the trends and the outliers. In doing so, we explore what lies behind the first spark of inspiration, and discover what drove these designers to make that spark into a fully fledged game. Watch the video of the panel, or read a written version below. Hayley: Hello all and thank you ..read more

Every Entry in the Penned to Good Society Game Jam – Part 3

In my last post exploring the Penned to Good Society game jam, I talked about the many supplements that can deeply change your game. This time, I’ll be going through desire, relationships, roles, rule modifications and reinterpretations and more! These aren’t intended to stand on their own or add a new element to gameplay, but rather to be used in place of or added to materials that already exist. I’ve sorted the jam submissions I’ve discussed by category, that they might be of more use to anyone looking for Good Society resources. Within the category, I’ve discussed each in the order they wer ..read more

In my last post exploring the Penned to Good Society game jam, I talked about the fascinating expansions that folks created as part of the jam. This time, it’s all about supplements. These are interesting additions you can frame your game around to change things up – sometimes just a little bit, and sometimes a hell of a lot. I’ve sorted the jam submissions I’ve discussed by category, that they might be of more use to anyone looking for Good Society resources. Within the category, I’ve discussed each in the order they were entered into the jam. Part 1 – Full expansions (in this blog post) Par ..read more

We’ve always been lucky to have an awesome community around our games, but in October last year, something truly amazing happened. Chloe (fiercefully on itch) ran a Penned to Good Society Jam. In Chloe’s words, “This jam celebrates Good Society… and the creativity of the people who love it.” The jam could include anything based on Good Society, or for use with the game and its expansions. Everything from full hacks, to new playsets, and extra resources.  All up, the jam had 15 entries, mostly created by those in our wonderful discord community (and yes, one by us, we couldn’t resist). Written by Vee Hendro I love designing one-shot games! The format has so many good features: the scope is smaller, which means easier to give love and care to every part of the game you can be more creative, it’s the perfect format to go on fun design tangents and explore that weird niche idea you’ve had in the back of your mind it doesn’t take as much time to playtest, you can see all of the game play out in one session! (also check out our tips on how to playtest your tabletop rpg) If you’re just starting out on your game design journey, I also recommend the one-shot format because it help ..read more

The highs and lows of a tense sports match make for great stories, but are a unique design challenge. We joined in the online fun at Big Bad Con 2021 to present The Making of a Match: Designing Sports Action. It was a good chance to reflect on our process and learnings designing the sports drama game, Fight With Spirit. We discuss balancing drama and simulation, flow, and a host of other rivals that we faced along the way! Watch the video of our panel below, or read the transcribed version below. And don’t forget to check out the many other excellent panels from Big Bad Con 2021. Ha ..read more

Emotional storytelling in rpgs has always been an area of interest for us, both as players and designers. This year we were lucky enough to speak at Metatopia 2020 on the topic The Human Heart: Engaging Emotions in RPG Design. Here is the video of our panel, or for those who prefer to read, I’ve included an (approximate) transcript of our discussion below.
