Nanoscale magnetic double helices (top) have been found to host highly coupled textures, observed both experimentally and with simulations (bottom). Image: Claire Donnelly. Scientists have used state-of-the-art 3D printing and microscopy to provide a new glimpse of what happens when taking magnets into three-dimensions at the nanoscale. The international team, led by researchers at Cambridge University’s Cavendish Laboratory in the UK, used an advanced 3D printing technique they developed to create magnetic double helices made of cobalt. Like the double helix of DNA, these magnetic double heli ..read more

We used a stain that allowed us to quantify the integration we got between original material and tissue. We were able to demonstrate some integration even after a short period of time.Liam Grover A new material that simulates all three predominant layers of skin, the hypodermis, the dermis and the epidermis, has been developed by a team from the University of Birmingham and University of Huddersfield in the UK. They devised a printing technique that produces an effective skin equivalent that could be key to the healing of chronic wounds. Deep and chronic wounds ar ..read more

Gel helps to support printing of skin biomaterial

The suspended layer additive manufacturing technique uses gel to support the skin equivalent as it is printed. Image: Moakes et al. Chronic wounds are deep and difficult to repair. Often, the top of the injury heals before the bottom, so the wound collapses in on itself. Over time, this can result in scar tissue and reduced skin function. In a paper in APL Bioengineering, researchers from the University of Birmingham and the University of Huddersfield, both in the UK, report a novel biomaterial for printing skin equivalents. This biomaterial is the first to simulate three layers of skin – the ..read more

3D Metalforge says that it has successfully 3D printed and installed parts on board an oil tanker. The company made the components as part of an additive manufacturing (AM) project also led by ABS, ConocoPhillips Polar Tankers and Sembcorp Marine Ltd, 3D Metalforge said. The additive manufactured parts were fabricated, lab-tested and installed on board the oil tanker Endeavour and were in operation on the tanker for six months. They were then inspected by the vessel’s crew and remote surveyed by ABS, and validated to be in good working condition. ‘The success of this project augurs well for th ..read more
