Last Sunday – November 8, 2020  Philippians 3:12-16  Matthew 17:1-8 These really are two of my favorite Bible verses.   I think because in his letter to Philippians St. Paul is sort of a cheerleader telling us to keep our eyes on Jesus and don’t look back; and Jesus demonstrates that sometimes in order to know that we’re going in the right direction, we have to look back.  In a sense, we look back in order to go forward; and in both cases our focus needs to be on God. So let’s look back...and let’s look forward. Some of you might remember my famous sermon on stuff ..read more

20 Pentecost / Confirmation – October 18, 2020  Acts 1:6-11  John 20:1-18 During our small group time in Confirmation this past week, since we’d been studying Paul’s Letters in the New Testament, we were talking about letters, and I shared a story about a letter I received when I was in maybe 6th grade.  I was attending Girl Scout Camp and my older sister wrote to me.  At one point she mentioned something that she wanted to do and then the next words were, “Dad is dead.” I dropped the letter, screamed and started to cry.  My friends were at my side in seconds and cou ..read more

19 Pentecost – October 11, 2020  Exodus 3:1-12  Matthew 28:16-20 “Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” What happens when you remove your sandals or your shoes?  If you think about it, shoes represent a kind of barrier between you and the earth.  We make shoes to protect our feet, but those same shoes can prevent us from feeling a part of the creation that is beneath our feet.  You may remember that in the second creation story, God took some dirt from the ground, formed it into a man and then breathed life into h ..read more

13 Pentecost – August 30, 2020  Romans 12:1-8  Matthew 16:13-20 Pope Francis once said, “Rivers do not drink their own water; trees do not eat their own fruit; the sun does not shine on itself; and flowers do not spread their fragrance for themselves.  Living for others is a rule of nature.  We are all born to help each other.  No matter how difficult it is … Life is good when you are happy; but much better when others are happy because of you.” I love that.  “Life is good when you are happy; but much better when others are happy because of you.” That’s what St ..read more

3 Lent – March 15, 2020  Exodus 17:1-7  Romans 5:1-11  John 4:5-42 Yesterday morning, John saw a touching story on the news.  Somewhere an elderly couple went to the grocery store with their list, but then, because of their fears of the virus, sat in their car for 45 minutes trying to get up the courage to go into the store and do their shopping.  Finally a young woman walked by.  The elderly woman opened her car window, handed the young girl a $100 bill and their grocery list and asked the girl if she would do their shopping.  She smiled, took the money and ..read more

19 Pentecost – October 20, 2019   Service of Confirmation  Genesis 32:22-31  Luke 18:1-8 It’s all about being persistent, isn’t it?  I attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa for my freshman year, and I learned something about not being persistent, at least where our faith is concerned.  It was my first Sunday in college, a Lutheran College, and I got up, showered, dressed for church and then wandered around the hallway in my dorm trying to find someone, anyone who was also going to church.  Not one girl on my floor got out of bed.  They all slept in inst ..read more

17 Pentecost – October 6, 2019 World Communion Sunday  Habakkuk 1:1-4; 2:1-4  2 Timothy 1:1-14  Luke 17:5-10 Hands are a wonderful thing aren’t they?  Just think of the gifts you’ve received from other people’s hands.  When I was young my mom would make these wonderful chocolate drop cookies.  They were like eating a piece of chocolate cake, but they were cookies.  I loved those cookies and I remember her teaching me how to make them.  She stood behind me and put my hand on the spoon and her own hand over mine and together we moved that spoon around th ..read more

15 Pentecost – September 22, 2019  Amos 8:4-7  1Timothy 2:1-7  Luke 16:1-13 “In A Word – Manager” This Gospel reading always has me wondering just what Jesus was really trying to say to his disciples.  If we’re not careful we might think that Jesus was saying that deception was okay, or that spending another person’s money in a dishonest way was a good thing to do.  I don’t think that’s what Jesus was saying, but his parable does make us think.  Being a manager, being a person who is charged with taking care of someone else’s possessions and money is an interest ..read more

16 Pentecost – September 29, 2019  Amos 6:1a, 4-7  1 Timothy 6:6-19  Luke 16:19-31 Pastor John Stendahl tells a powerful story about how easy it is for people to become invisible to others. “Years later,” he writes, “I still feel the shame.  I was visiting a young man in a facility for people with severe brain injuries.  He was agitated and eager to walk, so I joined him as he went from room to room and looked in each room as if he were searching for someone.  Eventually we came to a big room that was not in use.  At the far end a couple of janitors were at ..read more

14 Pentecost – September 15, 2019   Exodus 32:7-14   1 Timothy 1:12-17   Luke 15:1-10 There’s something special about joining with others around a table to share in a meal, don’t you think? As some of you know my older sister and her husband sold their house and most of their worldly possessions a few years ago so that they could travel throughout Europe in their retirement; and for the last 3 years that’s pretty much what they’ve been doing.  As they travel, they post photos of where they are and what they’re seeing, and it seems like most of their days end at a table wh ..read more
