Gōng Xǐ Fā Cái The Toronto Food Blog are creatures of habit.  We’re always happy to go back to the well once we’ve uncovered the goods.  To that end, Yummy House (234 Jones Ave) is a spot we’ve been frequenting on the regular lately. This hole-in-the-wall across the street from Riverdale Collegiate services the lunch rush with daily specials and plenty of Bubble Tea for the high-school crowd.  As usual, though, there’s more than meets the eye here.  Mom-and-pop making the magic happen from a single wok just as soon as class is dismissed. Jones Avenue love, baby!  Say ..read more

The Toronto Food Blog loves scouring all corners of the GTA for the best restaurants, greasy spoons, watering holes, food courts, strip malls, bodegas, markets and food trucks.  And to say that we like things spicy would be putting it mildly! With this as our north star, it may come as no surprise that February’s review comes from the heart of Burlington. D Hot Shoppe is serving up some of the best T&T food in all of the 416 & 905!  What a spot! Our mouths are still on fire from our last visit, and we’re pining to go back to try the rest of the menu. Happy New Year!  Thanks to everyone who followed, read  & supported the Toronto Food Blog in 2023.  We appreciate you!!! 2023 was a big year for the Toronto Food Blog as we continued our pursuit of documenting the best (and worst) restaurants, greasy spoons, watering holes, food courts, strip malls, bodegas, markets and food trucks throughout the 6ix. We sure did visit a lot of brand-new restaurants this past year… as well as finally getting to many established places for the very first time (more on that later). We hit the road often…  frequenting all boroughs in ..read more

Leslieville Pumps General Store and Kitchen (aka The Pumps) is a place that needs little introduction.  Located on Toronto’s lower eastside, the Flom brothers have been at the forefront of The 6ix’s BBQ scene for over a decade.  Growing out of their humble beginnings as a gas station and evolving into a general store & smokehouse, they’ve refined and perfected the two-hander one sandwich at a time. We have two current favourites.  The Southern Beef Brisket is Texas Cut (thicc), smoked low & slow and assembled with crispy sweet onions as well as house BBQ sauce & mus ..read more

The Toronto Food Blog has spent a lot of time in Cabbagetown over the years.  We lived there for a good stint and have always enjoyed the diversity & edginess that accompanies downtown living.  Momo Ghar is a new(ish) spot that’s really gaining some momentum, solidifying themselves as a mainstay in the ‘hood. We sure do wish they’d been around back in the day, but we’re making up for lost time by dropping in every couple of weeks to try everything on their Tibetan menu. Sonam owns and operates Momo Ghar.  He’s got the hospitality game down with his friendly and approachabl ..read more

Dating all the way back to 1954, Ted’s Restaurant is a West Hill institution.  We learned that the restaurant was created by some dude named Ted Petkoff.  He was one of the first regulars.  Buddy flipped it back in the day from a coffee shop to a full-fledged diner… then sold it off in the late ‘60s on the promise that it would retain its classic diner style. Well, they’ve done just that, preserving the ’50s decor it had when it opened.  Seems like their menu & prices have both retained classic status as well… which is a real good thing. As advertised, it is a great p ..read more

It’s the start of September, and that means the summer is starting to wind down.  Sigh!  But seeing as we’re in the midst of a long weekend, the Toronto Food Blog wanted to take a moment and celebrate some of the great patio eats on the Lower-Eastside of town.  After all, it’s not hard to reason with patio season. Lucky for us, the Riverside & Leslieville BIAs have teamed up again this year; a collaboration to promote the “support local” experience and a patio season like no other on their shared main street.  We’re thrilled to be part of it again this year! There’s st ..read more

It’s officially “Hot August Night” season, and we’ll just start this review by saying that the 6ix could definitely use more Indonesian spots.   To that end, we’re seriously  grateful that Ona Noddle has recently opened in our #EastChinatownTO ‘hood (where Simon’s Wok used to be). On our last visit, an Indonesian family visiting from L.A. had made this sleepy hole-in-the-wall their first meal in town.  They were staying at Hotel X, which made their trip across town all the more impressive.  They confirmed our suspicion that Ona’s cooking tastes just like home. Happy Canada Day, y’all. Olde Yorke Fish & Chips is a place that needs little introduction.  A Leaside institution, they’ve been doing one thing really, really well for the past 25+ years. Our first job back in the day was at Penrose, so we have somewhat of a discerning taste when it comes to Britain’s finest fare.  A bit of street cred’ (if we do say so ourselves).  For us, Olde Yorke checks all the boxes (and then some). The interior has got Coronation Street vibes, fashioned with checkered carpeting and sleepy booth seating.  Families adorn these tables, and there’s ..read more

Fearless Meat is a no-frills burger spot in The Beach that’s great for the whole family.  Owner David Brown has been a butcher for over 50 years and he hires kids from the neighbourhood to help steer the ship.  It’s easy to get #lunchunder10bucks here, and the entire menu is kiddo approved! Homeburgers are charbroiled to perfection and come in three sizes:  kids’, single (6oz.), and double.  They’re lean on fat, lean on the wallet, and come with all the fixins.  Mustard, onions and pickles for us, please!   Fries are fresh-cut, generously salted, and can be ..read more
