Lights casting a glow in Tank 3. Lights, History, Action! Vodojemy, in Brno’s Žlutý Kopec district, is located a short distance west of the city centre. The attraction consists of three underground water reservoir tanks that date to the late 1800s and early 1900s. The city waterworks stopped using the tanks in 1997 and they sat abandoned for several years. There was a plan in 2014 to demolish them. However, after some photos of the tanks were published in the media, public interest saved them from demolition and the Czech Ministry of culture declared the site a cultural monument. Many film stu ..read more

Dry February 2024 is Underway
Beyond Prague | The Czech Republic, outside of the capital

On the Dry Road February has begun and an estimated 1 million people across the Czech Republic will be observing Dry February, or Suchej Únor as it is known in Czech. 2024 marks the 12th anniversary of the event in the Czech Republic. With their long history of alcohol production, and the fact that they are some of the world’s largest consumers of alcohol, it should not be surprizing that an event like Dry February would have some traction among Czechs. Not every Czech sees the deep historical connection to alcohol production and consumption as a point of pride. I’ve met many Czechs, young and ..read more

Sombre Greetings The Christmas season of 2023 and the New Year of 2024 are upon us. As always, I take this time of year to thank my long time followers for staying on board and to thank new followers for coming on board. I also use the opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year. I do all of those things with this post. However, this year the joy of the season has been tarnished by the tragic and senseless shooting at Charles University in Prague on December 21. The entirety of the Czech Republic is absorbing the emotional impact of the incid ..read more

Dačice Chateau – Blue in Bohemia

Looking at the chateau from the garden side. Southern Sweet Spot Dačice is a town of a little over 7,000 people in South Bohemia, roughly 15 kilometers from the border with Austria. While the town is not touristy, it is home to a distinctive blue chateau that is an interesting example of a transitional architectural style between Classicist and Empire movements. The town also has the distinction of being the place where the sugar cube was invented. Not far from the chateau, you’ll find a monument commemorating the invention of the sugar cube in 1843. Let’s take a closer look at Dačice chateau ..read more

A photo from a recent visit to Telč An update from Behind the Scenes Aside of the articles I’ve posted on the main page of the website, some things have been going on in the background in the way of updates. Most of the articles have received text revisions or expansions where needed and many have received a full or partial update of photos and had their links checked. I’ve also had the opportunity to update the text and photos and l ..read more
