A seventh book of Cuba photography from Complete Cuba alumni is now available! This month, Joe Hohner releases his book Vintage Cuba featuring images from his March 2018 trip with Complete Cuba.
Joe states, “I spent nine days photographing Cuba in March, 2018. Visiting the island nation was a step back in time. I carried my camera everywhere. Always ready. Some people posed but most did not take notice or, if they did, seemed not to mind being photographed by a complete stranger. So different than other places I have visited. This book captures the the faces I saw and the places I went.”

Iré Elese Abure, a performance ensemble steeped in the dance, song, and drumming traditions of Afro-Cuban folklore, will perform at the Old Town School of Folk Music on November 1. The group prides itself on combining the sacred and the secular, and this event will include previews of ritual celebrations, drumming including batá (sacred drums used to communicate with and call down dieties), song, and dancing. After the Cuban revolution, Cuba had nearly 600 cinemas and theaters, including 134 in Havana alone, more than New York City or Paris. Today, fewer than 20 are in use as cinemas. (You may have seen our recent Facebook post sharing an article by Cassandra Brooklyn about going to movies in Cuba.)
Now, Italian photographer Carolina Sandretto has created a book, Cines de Cuba , documenting 300 of these long-abandoned cinemas, some of which have been reclaimed for new purposes.
