With the end of the "wet foot, dry foot" policy by the Obama administration, I didn't think Cubans did this any more. I wonder where they were headed to? Cuban rafters quarantined in the Bahamas Last post at: 2020-04-13 14:02:21 UTC ..read more

You should see an official announcement soon, but on Monday Thorn Tree will become read-only. 14:00 UTC These are uncertain times for us all, and while we certainly hope that Thorn Tree will be back online in the future, the moderation team will sadly be saying goodbye after many years. It has been mentioned in another thread by @andreas_at_lp but if you have any topics you would like to bookmark or users you would like to stay in contact with, now would be the best time to do so. Have a Happy and Healthy Future. Last post at: 2020-04-12 14:36:52 UTC ..read more

Thorntree Closing Down

Hi Cuba Branch, I've never been to Cuba, so don't usually post here. But you seem to have an active and involved community here, and you also seem rather cut off from the rest of the Thorntree. If you don't mind me saying. You might have missed it, since there's been no official announcement, and only a few hints, but the Thorntree is going to be shut down. I don't know exactly when, but almost certainly very soon. Do you have a back-up in place? If you want to continue your conversations from here, you're going to need somewhere else to do it. You're welcome to use the alternative that I've ..read more

After 9 more residents in Gibara tested positive for Covid19, the military has declared a mandatory quarantine for ALL residents who have been ordered to stay in their houses. All because one man returning home from Havana infected all six of his family members who has since tested positive. They were in contact with 124 people before testing. 11 of those have since tested positive. The most recent 9 have been in contact with at least 210 other people. Every single one was connected to the original 68 year old carrier who has since died. There are expected to be more victims. This does not ..read more

Cuba photos from the 90's

I don't know this photographer and have actually borrowed this link from Beansntoast which he posted on another site. These are not your usual Cuba tourist photos and I found them of special interest because of that. "I first traveled to Cuba in 1990. The architectural legacy of a sultry, decaying Havana, the cinematic landscape of the villages and countryside, and the people’s elegance, hospitality, and accessibility all combined for a compelling introduction. ......... Over the next six years I returned for eleven month-long trips, traversing the island numerous times" "The majority of th ..read more

A Nash Travel - Buyer Beware!

I used A Nash Travel in Mississagua, Canada based on the recommendation I saw on the Lonely Planet site and it did not turn out well to say the least. During these crazy times of global pandemic (COVID-19) it seems so many people are trying to help their customers but not Nash. Instead, they decided to take the opportunity to enforce their 1-night penalty cancellation policy on a hotel reservation I had made through them in Jan 2020 to take my mom to Cuba for her 90th birthday and withhold over $1000 of what I had paid them despite the hotel having issued them a full refund. When the COVID-19 ..read more

As the previous "Currently in Cuba" thread has been taken over by a lot of arguing, I thought to start a fresh thread for reporting information (or gossip) directly about Cuba. Here's one - from tomorrow, a consejo popular, which comprises about 1/4 of Vedado, is being put in to isolation - http://www.tribuna.cu/coronavirus/2020-04-02/consejo-de-defensa-provincial-de-la-habana-deciden-aislamiento-del-consejo-carmelo-en-el-vedado-minuto-a-minuto?fbclid=IwAR1JzJLWcvqgjnihjr2U9Pda2DF6mk-R64U7qoAh4owpgYfr6MNItWrqjE4 Last post at: 2020-04-03 03:11:35 UTC ..read more
