God Uses Cracked Vessels

What is man that you art mindful of him?  This is the question posed by King David in Psalm 8:4. It’s amazing that God’s plans have always been fulfilled through human vessels despite the fact that they are cracked vessels at best. God chose to use Abraham who betrayed the sacred trust of his wife by asking her to claim him as her brother.  Or Moses who lived in exile on the backside of a desert afraid for his life with the lofty goal of being a shepherd. Despite a serious lack of leadership qualifications, both of these men are recognized as great men of God. &nb ..read more

Let Failure Be Your Friend

New Year’s resolutions. We all make them and unfortunately almost all of us also fail to keep them. People eventually give up trying because of the sense of futility triggered by these repeated failures.  Fear of failure can develop a paralysis so incapacitating that unless we are confident of succeeding, we choose to do nothing. The African impala provides a vivid example of wasted potential simply because of the fear of failure. The African impala is related to the North American antelope and is capable of jumping 10’ high and 30’ in distance while standing only 36 inches tall at the sh ..read more

What do you want to be when you grow up? I’d imagine that almost everyone every born has been asked that question. The lofty dreams of youth bring such responses as; an astronaut, an athlete, a teacher and the list goes on. The reality is that we become what we surround ourselves with. I’m reminded of a quote for which I can’t find it’s origin but it goes like this; Show me your friends and I will show you your future. Because we don’t understand the significance of the friends we choose, the lofty dreams of youth frequently yields to the cynicism of disappointed adulthood. Spending time wit ..read more

Pursue Peace

During my prayer time today, I realized that I am in desperate need of peace and I remember my mom encouraging me when I was young to allow the peace of God to rule in my heart. I didn’t realize at the time was that she was sharing Scripture with me. Col. 3:15 says, “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.” Hindsight tells me that I really had no idea what real life was all about at the time. As my life continues to progress I realize that there will always be those seasons where my world is a mess and I will desperately need pe ..read more

Snapping Beans with Grandma

I recently read a quote that went something along the lines of “Part of the problem with the world today is that no one snaps green beans with Grandma anymore.” I must admit that this caused me to pause and remember my own Grandmother. I remember snapping green beans with my own little bowl and the tenderness of her instructions and the guidance that she gave along the way. The world that we live in today is fast paced; it is also full of “as seen on TV”, “3 monthly installments of $19.95”, and promises of the latest gadgets that can save you time and money. We have somehow lost sight of how l ..read more

Be a Leader

I spent the week in KC, MO. During this time I had the privilege to attend our church organization’s annual conference and participate in voting for it’s leadership and helping to shape it’s future. Let me say that I am grateful for the servant leadership of our church organization. We are blessed with both it’s past leadership and its present. While I was in the area I also had the opportunity to attend a handful of museums, including President Truman’s library. While I have a lot of take-aways from the week one that is fresh on my mind today is LEADERSHIP. Also, after learning more about our ..read more

“Are you from South Dakota?” was the question that came across my headset and for a couple of seconds I stared dumbly at my computer screen before I responded to my customer’s inquiry. It was a friendly question that he was asking out of sincere curiosity. I politely responded that I certainly was from South Dakota. The kind gentleman on the other end of my telephone line praised my accent and the beautiful countryside. I could tell that he was rather proud because was able to properly identify my midwestern accent. We chatted briefly about South Dakota and when the call disconnected I couldn ..read more

Whose Dream Are You Living?

Dream big!  That was the theme of a conference I recently attended. We were challenged to shed our self-imposed limitations and reach for the stars and as I headed home, my heart raced with anticipation of what laid ahead. Then a strange thing happened.  It suddenly dawned on me that despite what I had heard at the conference, my dreams could actually become an obstacle to finding fulfillment in life. I realized that what I really needed to do was abandon my dreams and discover God’s dream for my life. God created each of us with a special purpose in mind. Discovering and fulfilling ..read more

There has ever been a time in which I have felt more pressed to do more for the Kingdom of God.  I feel as if I am standing on the brink an incredibly massive landmine.   If I will just take that first step forward I know I will step into an entirely new dimension that will cause my entire world to explode around me. For years I have been watching as an increasing number of people lose focus of the mission that lies ahead of us.  There are some who would ask “what mission?”  The mission is to reach the whole world with the gospel. Unfortunately, I have allowe ..read more

A recent article I came across caused me to reflect on something that I struggled with for many years. I was reminded just how differently Jesus sees us than we see ourselves. The Bible talks about people with the 10 talents, 5 talents and 1 talent. Of course, I saw myself as a 1 talent person and compared myself to the 5 and 10 talent people. How could I ever measure up? I always ended up feeling so insecure when in the presence of people that I viewed as having all these talents that I didn’t have. It all came to a head one Sunday morning when I was feeling especially insecure. I asked God t ..read more
