People residing on the Border Since the attacks on Lay Kay Kaw and the subsequent running and hiding by its population and people in the surrounding areas, many of you have come and donated clothing and money. Our charity sale in the Gallery has not been very successful. Our Cake and Mohinga sale did generate money and together with donated books we sold well, we have been able to donate to several groups assisting people on the border. Of course, our donation boxes will stay open for more donations and more events are likely to be organized. Earlier we gave 10,000 baht to one group, 9,000 bah ..read more

Final Fundraising Weekend Our International Women’s Day (IWD) Exhibition so far has been one of the least visited art shows at Borderline. A late announcement and perhaps no sufficient promotion means we can literally count the visitors on one hand. So we try to go out with a bang. Coming weekend we will have two special activities to entice you to come and visit our Gallery. On Sunday and Saturday we will serve Mohinga Borderline Style and during the weekend you can try one of the 5 different coffees we have for sale together with some special cakes. All proceeds from these coffees and cakes ..read more

This past year our donation boxes have been used to help fund efforts to bring food to people who had to hide near the Moei river after their houses and communities had been attacked. Several groups in and around Mae Sot have been supporting people all along the border from South of Pho Phra to areas to the North of Mae Sot. This past weekend we started our special IWD exhibition with artwork from Sein Sein Lin, who has been a collective member since the start and was once the curator of the gallery and Sandy Shum who helped set up the gallery and for the first few years was one of its advisor ..read more

Since the start of Borderline we have commemorated and celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD) on or just after March 8, and 2022 is not different. Due to circumstances within and without our control, we have not prepared as in other years. This year we have as title, Women During Conflict. War does not just kill soldiers, in modern times most casualties are civilians. Women and Children as much as Men. Sein Sein Lin, Acrylic on Canvas, Knife On our annual IWD we focus on the creativity by Women and we always invite Women in our communities to share their expression with us. This year we as ..read more

Coming Friday we will have a very special art show with works by John Khai and his daughter Grace. Grace’s style is much more experimental than John’s so it will be very interesting to see if their personalities are depicted in their work. As usual we will provide snacks and juices and at least one of the artist will be around to answer questions. Friday February 25, 2022 ate Borderline Gallery, 674/14 Intharakeeree Road, Mae Sot It starts at 6 and will finish at 9 pm. Then the show will be displayed for two weeks ..read more

March 2020 was the start of the changes that were a result of Covid-19. At Borderline this led to a massive drop in activities and sales. At first we acted as if things were normal, using some of our savings to fill the gaps that were a result of those drop in sales. What we somehow hoped would be over in a few months, lasted until the end of 2020, now exactly one year ago. In August 2020, staff got together and decided that the working hours could be cut and as a consequence the salaries of staff would also be cut. When we told our landlord of this decision, they immediately showed solidarity ..read more

Thantlang in Chin State, Hpakant in Kachin State, Hlaing Thar Yar in Yangon became household names since February 1. Moso, Hpruso in Karenni State was unknown until last week. And now we learn about Lay Kay Kaw, Mae Thaw Talay and Palu. The First Clothing Donation. Thousands of people are forced to leave their homes and run to safety and even cross a river that serves as a border. They leave behind others and their belongings while helicopters and planes drop bombs. The Karen ask for a no-fly zone, while a world wide no-drop-bombs zone would make more sense. Locally people know what to do. In ..read more

Today the news in Mae Sot is dominated by the fighting that takes place not so far from here. A village that is purposely build to house people who spend decades living in refugee camps has come under attack by the same forces who were responsible for the atrocities which turned the people into refugees in the first place. For some it is the third or fourth time they need to run away from their home. Again they need to cross a border to safety, again they need to step into an uncertain future. Since the pandemic started a year and a half ago, the border between Thailand and Burma has been cl ..read more

Our latest job description read like this: “Your duties are the same as the rest of the staff”. Instead of 4 pages of all the small duties a prospected employee is expected to perform to avoid a potential future argument whether a required task was part of the job description, new staff is required to become part of the family. These long lists are more likely to scare the applicant as it seems a day doesn’t have enough hours to fulfill half of the requirements. In reality these lists contains mundane duties as well as specific skills. 78% are tasks you can do while listening to a colleagu ..read more

Choosing a name for an organisation, a business or a collective often is an exercise in brainstorming, collecting, eliminating, drafting, discussing, more collecting, drafting, eliminating, planing, sandpapering, deciding, changing, until at some point that name that always had to be the name was discovered, unearthed, brushed off, polished, and put on a letterhead. In 2004 there must have been several meetings before it was decided that Borderline should be called Borderline. After the name had been connected with an email address it turned out that the name Borderline is mostly associated wi ..read more
