A Subtle Friend

II Samuel chapter 13 holds two of the most tragic stories in the Bible; the rape of Tamar and the murder of Amnon. We see such needless and pointless pain and suffering caused by sin. The first three verses set the stage for this story, “And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her. And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do any thing to her. But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s b ..read more

Forgiveness

Ephesians 4:32 says, “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.” I just went over the lesson of forgiveness with one of many families that are going through discipleship at our Spanish church. Forgiveness in my opinion is one of the most beautiful and pleasant words in the English vocabulary. I love to identify myself as a forgiven person, not just forgiven by others here and there, but mainly forgiven by our kind and loving God, our Father! It brings such a satisfaction to know and even feel it in my heart that my s ..read more

Mark 13:34-37 At the beginning of Mark 13, Jesus foretells of the destruction of the temple of Jerusalem. The disciples then ask Jesus when will this happen and the signs of it. Jesus proceeds then to give more details and examples of this prophecy which leads us to this text… Mark 13:34-37, “For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, o ..read more

2 Samuel 2:3-7 “And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron. And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabeshgilead were they that buried Saul. And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabeshgilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the Lord, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him. And now the Lord shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, becau ..read more

Bearing the Good News

Christ is risen! There is no greater news than that. Can you imagine being there at the time of His resurrection? There were a few brave Christians who had the opportunity to see the empty tomb. We read in Matthew of at least two women who visited the grave early in the morning. They were surprised to see the stone rolled away but even more startled by the presence of an angel atop the stone. The angel encouraged the faithful ladies by telling them that Jesus has risen, then gave a command to go tell the disciples the good news. No time was wasted before the command was obe ..read more

Like Manure

In Matthew 25:14-30, we find the parable of the talents. I believe for most Christians, this is a familiar Bible story. As we read through the story, we see that two servants did well and doubled the talents that were given to them. The third servant, however, did very foolishly and hid the money that was left with him.  “But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money.” (v.18) He didn’t lose, steal, or squander it, he simply hid it away. Francis Bacon said, “Money is like manure, good for nothing in the heap, but it must be spread; yet it is an evil w ..read more

Are you a “Good Christian”? There are many different answers and responses to this question. Hopefully, there would be one of humility and desire of spiritual growth instead of pride and boasting. But ask yourself… are you a good Christian? What qualifies one as a “good” Christian? I want to be. Only God is the righteous judge to answer that question. Now, we should strive to be a Good Christian… Philippians 3:14, “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Just as a child should grow mentally and physically into a mature adult. We need to grow s ..read more

Matthew 5:44-48 “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heav ..read more

Light or Darkness

What a difference a little bit of light can make! Think back to when you were looking for a missing item in the dark or trying to make your way through an unlit room. You would have given just about anything for a flashlight. The Bible mentions light over and over again. It was one of the first things created by God at the beginning of Genesis. Many times, the Scripture does not refer to light just as the waves passing through the air that allow our eyes to see, but it compares light to righteousness. It parallels light with goodness and darkness with evil. I learned severa ..read more

God's Tender Mercies

Psalm 69:16 tells us, Hear me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies. Today I am writing my staff blog from a different country. This week I was invited to preach in the countries of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. My heart is always overwhelmed with gratitude for our Lord and the blessings that he allows us to have in our country, America. Our country is not perfect, but I can tell you that all it takes is for us to visit another country to see that God has surely blessed America for being a Bible-believing nation for many years. Yest ..read more
