The march of a pressure sore
Shane Clifton

I’ve spent four of the last eight weeks in bed. In early September, my support workers discovered a small pressure mark on my bottom. Likely the consequence of a problem with the cushioning on my wheelchair seat, it didn’t seem too bad at first, and I wasn’t all that worried. In retrospect, I waited a day too long to get off it. But it quickly became clear I couldn’t ignore the issue. Protocol for pressure demands you stay off it. If you don’t, it gets worse, bigger, uglier (Google spinal cord injury pressure sores if you want nightmares). So bedrest it was. The trial of healing a pressure sor ..read more

After four years, I have finished at the Royal Commission, and start a new role as Associate Professor in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Sydney, Connected with the Centre for Disability Research and Policy.Working at the commission was challenging, at times traumatic, stressful and frustrating, but also meaningful. I’m immensely thankful for the disabled people who shared their stories, and my colleagues who supported me along the way.I look forward to returning to teaching, and to writing and research under my own name and direction. In the way of life, which is determined ..read more

(featured image, Wonder lines, by lou chavepayre – https://www.chvpr.com/lignesderre2, image description: a young women, stretched out on a white canvas and a circle of black paint, covered head to toe in paint – the art and artist merged) I have fallen in love with the art and beauty of Lou Chavepayre. An artist with cerebral palsy, I first encountered her work on Apple TV’s Home (s2e1). While the episode was focused on her mother’s stunning outdoor/indoor accessible home in France, it gave a glimpse of Chavepayre’s artistic process and work (including the above piece). When the episode finis ..read more

10 year anniversary of the spinal cord injury today. Woke up in a puddle of piss, which I guess is symbolic. But I’ve come a long way, learned a few things, made some mistakes and, all in all, life is good (when it’s not shitty). Disability has taught me much about the world and our embodied strengths and vulnerabilities. I’ve met wonderful people and known great generosity. I’ve had fascinating new work opportunities (presently with the Disability Royal Commission). I’ve been enriched by friendships with other crips. I’ve had good support from healthcare workers and the disability system in A ..read more
