Lions of Lydia
Tabletop Together

A bag building game where you only have 4 meeples in your bag sounds pretty boring doesn’t it? But Lions of Lydia is anything but boring. It features super interesting choices every round and a very interactive board. On your turn you draw a random meeple from your bag. You place that on the board to either get resources based on where other meeples are placed or spend the resources to get property. These properties can give you powers that let you get more resources when you place meeples. At the end of the round you pick a new meeple to place in your bag. As you play, golden meeples will be ..read more

Review: Ka Pai
Tabletop Together
by Peter H. Møller

When people think of New Zealand, they probably think about one of two things; sheep or Lord of the Rings. There is much more going on in New Zealand and many people call the island home in addition to those sheep. One such group is the Maori people. They are the indigenous Polynesian people of mainland New Zealand and in Ka Pai, a roll and write by Mads Fløe and White Goblin Games, you are trying to bring together three different tribes of Maori people. What is Ka Pai like? Ka Pai is a roll and write, like many others, where you roll a set of dice and all players record the results on their ..read more

First Impressions: Gods Love Dinosaurs
Tabletop Together
by Peter H. Møller

Who doesn’t love dinosaurs? I sure do. And I also love Gods Love Dinosaurs. In addition to the very nice animal meeples in the game, Gods Love Dinosaurs does something very unique for me. It manages to make an abstract game feel very thematic.  I know it sounds a little strange. How can an abstract game feel thematic, wouldn’t it then not be an abstract game at all? Allow me to explain.  In Gods Love Dinosaurs you spend your turns drafting tiles, with either prey or predator animals on them. At certain points in the game, certain animal types activate and they each have their own si ..read more

Review: The Quest for El Dorado
Tabletop Together
by Peter van der Helm

The Quest for El Dorado is Reiner Knizia’s take on the deck-building genre. It has been more than 10 years since the world was introduced to deck-building games with Dominion, but The Quest for El Dorado is Knizia’s first deck-building game. The Quest for El Dorado was released in 2017 by Ravensburger, but as of 2019, there is a new edition with gorgeous art from Vincent Dutrait. The game is language-dependent so if you want this newer edition in English you will have to get one from Finnish publisher Lautapelit.fi There are other localized editions as well. Note that these editions are not c ..read more

What we played in August 2020
Tabletop Together

Each month the Tabletop Together Team gets together to compare notes and talk about what games we played. In this article series, we share the highlights of the last month with you. Peter H. Møller A nasty cold and too much work, unfortunately, got in the way of gaming time this month. But I did get to play some games. The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine is my most played game of course (that’s not fair since you play it so many times in a row). My friends like it and I can see it’s a good game, but it just isn’t a game I enjoy that much. I’ll still play it with them if they want. Good compan ..read more

Review: Valley of the Kings: Premium Edition
Tabletop Together
by Peter H. Møller

As Indiana Jones once said, “If you want to be a good archaeologist, you gotta get out of the library.” If Indiana Jones is right, then how about getting out of the library and into Valley of the Kings, by Tom Cleaver and AEG. I mean technically you could play it in a library and you aren’t really doing any archaeology, but I’d rather play a game than actually dig for artefacts. Does Valley of the Kings: Premium Edition make me feel like a true archaeologist? What is Valley of the Kings like? Valley of the Kings is a deck-building and deconstructing game where the goal is to get as many point ..read more

What we played in July 2020

Peter H. Møller It’s been a great month for me. Not only did I get to play some of my “older” favourite games, but also got to try out a bunch of new to me games. I’m glad I got Grand Austria Hotel on the table again. This fantastic dice drafting game never disappoints, and it’s even better with my new “blinged-out” tokens (I know it’s silly, but it meant more to me than it should have).  I was on a 1-week tour of Denmark (my home country) with my wife, and I, of course, brought a lot of small 2 player games along. I’m so glad I did because I got to play 3 great games I never tried befor ..read more

Review: Miyabi
Tabletop Together
by Peter H. Møller

Some of the best games out there are simple and elegant designs. Miyabi is definitely trying to be just that, elegant, both in design and in theme. But has the legendary Michael Kiesling succeeded? Or will it end up as one of those games that will be forgotten in time? Let’s find out. What is Miyabi like? In Miyabi you take turns drafting various polyomino tiles and then place them in your very own zen garden. Each turn a new random bunch of tiles are drawn from the lid of the box and put on display. You take turns taking one of these and try to find the perfect spot for the tile you choose o ..read more

Review: Bloom Town

Thar’s gold in them thar hills. Wait, what’s that you say? It’s Bloom Town, not Boom Town? Oh, one second then… Thar’s flowers in them thar hills. Is that better? All puns aside, Bloom Town by Sidekick Games, is all about building the best town. The way you do it, is unlike most tile placement games I’ve ever played. So, what makes it so unique? What is Bloom Town like? Bloom Town is a tile placement, city building game that uses simple turns and an interesting scoring mechanism to drive decisions. Each turn players will choose one of the two tiles in their hand to place into their city. Each ..read more
