Student behavior gets a bad wrap. Often focused on compliance and management, attempts at helping students to learn prosocial behaviors can be frought. Many of our typical "behavior expectations" are white-dominant culture norms and don't honor student agency and voice. At the same time, interacting with one another in a shared space and active learning self-management strategies are essential. Today we will consider how we can support positive student behavior with an equity lens. What is a Behavior Expectation? There are three types of behavior expectations: Rules or Expectations: The ..read more

The new school year is starting and many schools are beginning the year in online learning. As school counselors, this presents an unique challenge for how to proactively support students through a comprehensive school counseling program. By rethinking some of our basic best practices, I think we can successfully implement school counseling during remote learning. As I share suggestions today, make sure to keep your districts guidelines and policies in mind as you consider how you will shift and change your program this school year. Mental well being is important for everyone. Just like everyone has physical health, everyone has mental health. As we live as a community in the midst of a pandemic and racial strife, we are facing mental well being obstacles that sometimes seem overwhelming. I think it's safe to say, 2020 is too much. Oftentimes, teachers and other school staff come to school counselors to find out how to support student mental well being. I've recently discovered the WE Teachers hub that includes a module on mental well being. The module is BIG (the full PDF is 52 pages). Knowing that everyone is rat ..read more

Well, it's August 1, 2020 and that means there's only one thing on every school counselor's mind. What in the world are we going to do to support our students as we reopen school? First, let me explain that when I say "reopen," I mean starting the school year - whether that's virtual, hybrid, or fully in person. No matter how students rejoin our school community, we will need to be ready as school counselors to support them and their families in navigating school during a pandemic. Acknowledge Difference We're all coming back different. Not everyone is traumatized - some kids have had a great ..read more

This week my co-author, Alicia Oglesby, and I had the honor of speaking with Laura & Kim from Counselor Accents.  We talk about our book, Interrupting Racism: Equity and Social Justice in School Counseling. We also tell the story of how we met, what made us write a book, how many times we've actually seen each other in person and what will make me walk away from it all and start a lemonade stand. The real topics we discuss: equity vs. equality messing up student access bias what to do in return to school We truly enjoyed our conversation with the ladies at Counselor Accents ..read more

Hello my school counseling heroes. I know that you are all working hard right now to support your students, staff, and families during the COVID-19 crisis. Our work is always hard and now it's been made harder. One of my colleagues said "it's like our muse is gone." Couldn't agree more, without the kids, it's like the best parts of our jobs are whittled down to the notsofun parts. Hang in there, this too shall pass.  My co-author, Alicia Oglesby, and I had the opportunity to host a #scchat with ASCA School Counselor of the Year extraordinaire Laura Ross. I feel like Laura was there from ..read more

When I first started as a school counselor, I was in a building where I was the only counselor. I went straight from undergrad to grad school and had not actually spent any time in an elementary school outside of my school counseling internship. I had a lot to learn! Luckily, I was surrounded by amazing teachers who served as mentors for me. While they couldn't support me in school counseling, they taught me to connect with colleagues, push my students for more, and appreciate fun in learning.  Lessons I Learned One of my teacher mentors was someone who had a natural caretaker personal ..read more

It's been one of those months. More on the to-do list than time to do it. Feeling overwhelmed and trying to stay afloat. I know you've been there. That's why I was thrilled to be hosting a webinar through my state association this past Friday on Making Data Manageable. I've talked before about managing your data without losing your mind and organizing your comprehensive counseling program. This is a continuation on those themes. In case you couldn't make it, here are some of my top tips. Many times when people hear “data” – they immediately think “no, not going to happen, I’m done.” I o ..read more

Interrupting Racism: Book Discussion Guide

When you set out to write a book, you're hopeful someone other than your mom will read it. In our case, we wanted to make an impact in school counseling and for students. We are thrilled with the amazing response we've had to our book Interrupting Racism: Equity and Social Justice in School Counseling. One of the things that I find the most exciting and humbling (yes, all at once), is the number of school counseling teams and district-wide professional learning communities (PLCs) that are using the book this year.  To support that work, we are hosting an ASCA Webinar called Ignite Chang ..read more
