I’m so excited to read Jessica Grose’s new book, Screaming on the Inside: The Unsustainability of American Motherhood (out 12/6). An excerpt from the book–which includes quotes from a discussion she and I had about the impact of momfluencer culture on maternal mental health–is featured in the New York Times Parenting section today. It features one of my favorite pieces of advice regarding momfluencers: Following the recommendations of a momfluencer you don’t respect is like taking medical advice from a doctor you think is a quack. Check it out, and pre-order her book! Tweet The post Momfluence ..read more

I’ve spent so many sessions with patients discussing anxiety over decisions, both COVID and non-COVID-related. It seems like we parents are constantly called upon to make choices, and after 2+ years of too many choices we are exhausted. I was so happy to partner with Vivvi’s Jessica Pallay and Not Safe For Mom Group‘s Alexis Barad-Cutler to discuss how to cope with parental decision fatigue. Hope you find this helpful as you navigate your own unending decision-making! Tweet The post Talking parental decision fatigue with Vivvi appeared first on Expert advice for moms by a mom ..read more

What to do when you see your kid struggling with the things you struggle with

I was excited to contribute to this piece by the always-excellent Jessica Grose for The New York Times Parenting. It can be hard when you see your kid struggling with the exact same things you struggle with. (And I can also completely relate on a personal level, as my older son is basically a sports-loving version of me.) The upshot: it can be hard to see your kids struggle with the very things you’ve always struggled with. But remember that you and your kid are not the same person, and your childhood circumstances are completely different. Plus, your kid likely has significantly more mental h ..read more

I was so thrilled to talk to Katie Lowes–a wonderful actress and advocate for moms and maternal mental health issues–for her excellent parenting podcast “Katie’s Crib.” We discussed everything from learning to show yourself compassion as a mom, to dealing with mom-shamers, to effectively navigating holidays and vacations with little ones. I hope you enjoy the episode as much as I enjoyed my conversation with Katie! My latest in The Washington Post: Managing parental anxiety when *everything* feels high-stakes

Since the pandemic started, we parents have been reminded *every single day* that it’s our job to keep our kids safe. While we were aware of this responsibility before COVID-19, it seems like our experiences with COVID have amplified that feeling of responsibility, to the point where we’re becoming anxious about formerly inconsequential day-to-day childcare matters. I’ve been witnessing this phenomenon among my patients. Many decisions that once would not have merited a second thought, like what to feed their kids or whether to go on the tall slide at the park, now feel fraught with meaning an ..read more

Last Mom Brain holiday tip: Take care of yourself! I filmed this last week, before everything with COVID started going really haywire (again). But I think the advice is even more important now, as moms are in overdrive—there’s the the holidays, kids being home because of COVID, and mounting anxiety over, well, everything. During the holiday break, it’s critical that you set aside a time that’s just for you, *every day,* and plan ahead of time to ensure that it will happen. Wishing you and your family a healthy and happy holiday break! See you in 2022. Tweet The post Last Mom Brain Holiday Tip ..read more

Mom Brain Holiday Tip #5: Set a (very loose) schedule

As much as we often look forward to holiday breaks, they can be *very* anxiety-provoking for moms of young kids, who often find themselves staring down long, cold days without any schedule or plans. It can help to set a (loose and easily adjustable) schedule for each day, even if the schedule looks something like: Wake up, eat breakfast, take a walk, watch Elf, play board games. Sharing this schedule with your kids ahead of time will help reduce their anxiety, too, as it will give them a sense of what to expect from their day. Mom Brain Holiday Tip #4: Make sure to delegate!!!

Attention moms! You are NOT the only one who can make the holidays magical for your kids! Make sure you delegate holiday responsibilities so that other family members are doing their share. Play to everyone’s respective strengths when dividing tasks…and be aware that your family members might not do things exactly as you would! But that’s ok-it’s a small price to pay for your sanity. Mom Brain Holiday Tip #3: Think about the worst-case scenario

What if I can’t find my kid that toy they desperately want? What if I run out of time to turn my house into a Winter Wonderland? What if I can’t manage to get my holiday cards sent out? These types of worries often send my mom patients into a holiday anxiety tailspin. In response, I ask them to consider what the worst-case scenario would be if, say, they couldn’t get that toy for their kid, or their house didn’t get decorated, or they didn’t get their holiday cards out. What moms always come to realize: their kid will manage if they don’t get that toy (and will likely forget all about that toy ..read more

Mom Brain Holiday Tip #2: Just say screw it!

Today’s Mom Brain holiday tip: Just say “screw it!” Lots of my mom patients spend time worrying about how things will go when they take their kids to holiday celebrations. Where and how will their kids nap? What will their kids eat? How will they maintain their kids’ schedules? Moms scramble to control what is essentially an uncontrollable situation: kids are in an unfamiliar environment, likely over-sugared and over-gifted, with people they don’t normally see. I encourage my patients to release the pressure on themselves to control everything, because they won’t be able to. (And as far as I’m ..read more
