Cats are welcome at our Boutique Backyard studio, but often cats are loathe to travel and more comfortable in their home environments. That’s why we offer in-home cat sessions.   A recent session with Maine Coon kitten Jambalaya showing off her sass. Close-up of Jambalaya in her mother’s arms. Jambalaya in her “honey pot”. We love to use any cat condos, toys or other favorite play things in our portraits. Family portrait with kitten Jambalaya. If your cat is allowed in the yard or patio we can also get a portrait there. This orange tabby Siggie likes to lounge in the backyard. If you ..read more

Are you nervous about your dog’s first portrait session and wondering what to bring? Never fear, we’ve got your checklist right here: 1.       Treats – If your dog is at all “food-motivated”, meaning will do anything for food, bring your dog a little hungry and don’t forget their favorite high-value treats, you know the ones they really like. This could be store-bought dog cookies, boiled chicken, cut up hot dogs or string cheese. If you have been giving them the same old treats lately, get something new that might be more exciting. This portrait of Lily was poss ..read more

Most people have heard of Adobe Photoshop and are aware that images can be drastically altered. It’s true and it can really help improve pet portraits! Peanut, named ironically because he’s so big, was anxious about being photographed. We kept him on leash since his tendency was to wander off. On the left is a good photo of him, but the backdrop is not long enough and the leash and collar are very visible. Luckily the floor and background can be extended and his leash and collar removed. Koda and Jasper, Weimaraner puppies less than a year old, would only pose together if they were being hel ..read more

What to Wear for Your Portait

A common question people have is what to wear to their photo session. Choice of clothing can make a big difference. We want the viewer to look at the person and the pet in the image and not be distracted by the clothing so the first advice is to avoid busy patterns and large logos. Keep it simple Blue jeans and sweaters with no pattern make the dog really pop. The lack of patterns, flashy colors or logos keeps the eye on what’s important – the couple and their dog. Less Skin People’s eyes are drawn to skin, but we want them to look at your face not your legs or arms so wear long sleeves and ..read more

Gotcha Day is the day you brought your new family member home, whether it was a young puppy or a senior pet. Though some people know their pet’s birthday or have an approximate month, if you don’t know the exact day, the Gotcha Day is a great day to celebrate. But how does one typically celebrate a Gotcha Day? Here are some ideas: Celebrate with Cake There are dog-friendly bakeries that can make you a custom cake, you can make your own from scratch (typical ingredients that are good for dogs include peanut butter, carrots and honey) or there are even doggy cake mix boxes you can buy to make t ..read more

Introducing Pipi’s Boutique Backyard Studio! Doing sessions in my backyard came about partly because I moved, and my new backyard was awesome, but also because of Covid restrictions making the parks crowded. Location Castro Valley is just east of San Leandro and Hayward right off interstate 580 in the East Bay part of the San Francisco Bay Area. There is plenty of street parking in my new Castro Valley neighborhood, but I also have an extra driveway, so your spot is waiting for you in front of the welcome sign. The yard is fenced so dogs can go off-leash safely. Time is built in at the beg ..read more

Sometimes people really want a photo of all their pets together, but the pets will not cooperate. Luckily magical edits done in post-production can save the day! These three dogs were a close-knit pack, but they were too high-energy to calmly sit next to each other. I was able to get individual shots from a similar angle with the same background so I knew they could be combined later. Here’s the final combo image of Fauci, Chloe and Ginger. These two cats would not pose together (the one on the left still had kitten energy and the older cat kept jumping down), so I made sure to get individu ..read more
