Is it possible to use a combo halter-bridle as a bit-less bridle?

I have a combo halter-bridle because I do a lot of trail rides. Obviously this means that the bit section of it is removable. Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of things about turning a rope halter into a bit-less bridle and was curious if you could use a combo halter-bridle as a bit less bridle if you took off the bit but left the reins on? I wanted to give a bit-less bridle a try because I wanted to try neck reining in the future and I’ve read it can be a useful step towards that. Does anyone/disagree? Any feedback is appreciated. This may be a stupid question, but better to ask and know than t ..read more

Leasing Struggles

Hi all. This is my first reddit post (on a burner) because I am really at a loss with what to do at this point. I’m gonna keep this as short as humanly possible. Early last year I started volunteering at a therapy non profit barn and I was bit by the horse bug HARD. I’m 22F and have always been interested in horses, but was never able to get into lessons or anything in my childhood. For added context, volunteers earn rides base on hours and vol rides only happen 1.5-2 months out of the year, so its not like I could just earn ride time and hop on a horse. Leasing is the only way to do it year ..read more

Horse Knowledge

what are some good resources for wanting to know more in-depth about horse movement? I grew up being a wild horse girl whose parents didn't let her do lessons and lived vicariously through youtube videos. Now that I am an adult I have been doing lessons for the past year and loving it! Luckily growing up a horse girl I knew a good bit about basic horse stuff and found it very helpful for starting out. I always knew I wanted to try eventing and am very thankful my barn has an eventing team. I am actually doing my first CT this show season so that next year I can confidentially do the eventing ..read more

New saddle components advice

After 5 long months my beautiful new saddle has arrived. The details are amazing and I’m still floored over the amount of hand carving. There’s a few new (to me) components I need to get used to and would love input from other riders. Hide wrap on the horn- it’s so soft right now and I’d love to keep it that way. What’s proper maintenance for this piece? Do I hit it with oil/conditioner like I do the rest of the saddle? Do these get changed out sometimes? It came with a half breed off billet instead of a typical off billet. I haven’t used a half breed before but the increased strength (holds ..read more

Riggy Gelding

Hi we have a riggy gelding who is super whinny and has separation anxiety I think. He used to mount our mares that were in heat, always mark on their poop, bite them, etc. So we moved him with the other gelding donkeys. But even after 3 weeks he’s still pacing back and forth and whining. I think he really misses the company of another horse. Do you think we could give him the mare that’s too old to have cycles anymore? Or does he need a gelding horse? My boss wants to get rid of him but I love his personality so I’m trying to fix is stress. He’s on stress supplements. He isn’t whinny all day ..read more

How to “feel” the canter and let arms and hands follow naturally?

I have been riding for a while (hunters first, recently switched to jumpers) and love it. My horse is the sweetest, most gentle, eager-to-please girl I could ever ask for and her canter is very comfortable. However, for some reason I am having trouble relaxing my arms and elbows and letting them follow naturally at the canter - and I don’t know how to fix it because the problem is I don’t even feel that I am doing it wrong. I know have very soft hands with the reins but my trainer is trying to teach me how not to brace and involuntarily having my horse run into my hands at the canter instead ..read more
